If you have the money to spend on the crafting upgrade items go for it, otherwise there is no point because crafted weapons are 630 initially, 640 after upgrade #1 which you can also obtain from CMs, Invasions, or missions. if you can go for the 655 lvl weapon upgrade (depending your realm that can be insanely expensive) then you should be good unless you plan to do at least normal which drops 655s.
ive gone for helm, chest and trinket, purely because a) trinket op for destro) and b) cause lock and mage are engineer/tailor making it easier to make the upgrade components
Pants, chest, trinket.
#SargerasIsComingToSaveUs
currently; 1 of 2 weapons (thanks blizz for punishing dual wielders), trinket and cloak.
if i can get a pair of 630+ weapons i will def switch crafted sword to shoulders or boots.
I took trinket, and then boots because I know I will replace chest/head/legs/shoulder/gloves with tier when I get them, but then I ended up replacing shoulders because it was the last piece of gear under 630 and I wanted higher ilevel to get random groups.
Trinket is #1 (at least for destro), cuz its better than non-mythic Highmaul trinkets. Not to mention my raid (and I assume others) always have tons of casters who need those.
Then went for legs. Not really worth getting a 3rd piece till I know I can upgrade it. Especially since Mythic next week...
Graviity
I'm doing trinket and shoulders currently. Shoulders were just the biggest upgrade for me so I grabbed those. I didn't put much thought into it.
I'm done with crafting.
I tailored a 640 belt and got crap stats.
I used the super expensive reagent 6 times & only got crap stats and on e the same as the original.
Then I calculated it would cost me about 40k to upgrade it to 655.
Tldr: Buying a BoE will be cheaper, and you will know what you get.
It's like you craft either a Mercedes or a Ford with the same components. And you give it to a tuning specialist and all of a sudden your 400 hp twin turbo just be became a 70 hp diesel for a princely sum. But the tuning specialist tells you not to worry they'll do a 800 hp next time.
I'm not sure why Blizzard think we need unluck on top on unluck on top of farming for crafts.

chest-cloak - belt
Head + Gloves (Haste/Mastery) and Chest (Haste/Mastery) or DMF 2/2.
before you even bother with crafted stuff think about it this way ... savage bloods are around 2k each, it takes 30 of them to upgrade, including the initial crafted piece which is around 15k .... so that crafted piece is really going to cost you 75k. If you make everything yourself that's great, but you could have sold all of that for 75k, so it still costs you 75k.
you can get something that is 695 mythic from blackrock foundry, BiS for everything planned for the entire expansion so far for a little over 100k on most servers, or you can buy an equivalent to your crafted piece 665 boe for 20-45k, or get a 670-676 highmaul trash drop boe that you either farm yourself through group finder or pay 45-65k for, but is much better than a 3/3 crafted piece and will be cheaper in the end.
The only crafted pieces I can see spending the bloods to upgrade would be bracers, since the highmaul bracers are terribly itemized and there are no boe bracers, and maybe the trinket.

yeah, my math was actually waaaayyyyy off. the bloods are 60k, the first crafted piece is 15k, and then I forgot that it takes 1.5x that for the first upgrade and then double that for the second upgrade, so I left out 30k + 22.5k .... so a crafted piece upgraded 3/3 really costs a minimum of 127.5k right now, which is 7k more than the highest auctioning 695 mythic piece of gear from the blackrock foundry raid that isn't even out yet sold for on my server.
Totally not worth it in most cases, sell those mats and keep your eye on bmah, and 665-676 boe's in the regular ah.
I went with trinket chest and belt(because I had my M WF still)
This is not how you should work this
My advise - check what items that drop for you in Highmaul are not optional and get those slots filled with crafted gear.
Getting a crafted peice to 665 ilvl is long and expencive journey. Think about your poket and time spend just to remove it for the first warforged/soket piece. Waste of recources and gold.
For my spec the chest legs and hands are not optional thats why i have filled those spots with crafted gear. 2 of them already at 655 ilvl

Shoulders, bracers, boots. Thinking forward to tier pieces for aff.
Well, I bought a perfect rolled chest, with intention to use my tailor to upgrade it. Next day got a 645 chest missions and got a roll with identical secondaries, just 5 ilvls better. Crafted chest 1 day old now in bank.
SO far just using the one crafted slot with DMF Trinket. I Do not expect to be able to get the mats together on my scribes to upgrade it before I replace it. I may make some gloves or pants, they are my only 630's.
Either way, the way the system is layed out I don't see using anything beyond stage 1 of 3 on crafted items as place holders...
