It's not like intentionally taking a heavily franchised and capitalized IP that you don't own to use as a setting for a game that you wish to franchise and capitalize on wouldn't get you slapped with a cease and desist order. Who knew?

Why people continue to think that they can make games/do a Kickstarter using an IP they don't own is beyond me. I think there have been what, 3 or so Harry Potter MMO's/games that people have tried to Kickstart in recent years?

I was skimming through some stuff on massively about Turbine, because some guy has been posting on a lotro fansite some full disclosure stuff about their company, that Turbine was going to do a Harry Potter MMO. That was probably as close to legit as we were gonna get since WB owns Turbine as well.

I wish they would take advantage of the IP though, because as good as the lego games and some one off titles were, they could do so much more. Something like a cross between Skyrim and Dishonored set in that universe, letting Tell Tale have a go at it...I mean...lots of potential.

So I'm thinking they should just make a Wizard themed MMO where you play a child who enrolls in a school of magic caled Nogwarts. The dark lord Moldevort has just been defeated by Sheri Totter, the girl who lived. Moldevort's curse that failed left a moon shaped scar on her head. Years before she herself attends Nogwarts with her close friends Germione and Don, you can play your own adventure.

Join Hippogriffindor, Pufflefluff, Crowclaw, and Slytherskin houses. Compete in Kwidditch, catch the Silver Sneetch, win the House Trophy. Ok I'll stop, but this is fun.

They could set it around the time of the first or second books. You would have the majority of gameplay based around the school, but with just hints of the bigger, darker evil outside. Maybe I am jaded because I think the books pretty much sucked after the first 4 when it just became a very drawn out good guy-bad guy story without much depth. The first couple books are the ones that captured everyone´s imagination, the last books we ´had´to read just for closure.

MMORPGs are rarely about the world anyway. gameplay > lore

Since it was mentioned in the book but not the actually story we could be set in the time that the school was new and the actually founders godric griffindor and all them were alive or even the time of grindelwald a wizard rises to power and turns to the dark side (sry SWTOR jumping in) so much back story there not really a point setting it now can't have millions of harry potters working together or some random stranger.
Plus if it was set in the past at the time of the founders there is alot of room for them to be creative and the different classes could be more specialised cause in the present time in the books they all learn the same thing and have same abilities pretty much. But set in the past the schools may be more type oriented since dumbledores not there example slytherin being taught the dark arts in secret etc etc

here's an idea i just had...

you start as a seventh year in hogwarts right before your graduation, the tutorial is leading up to your graduation, as your graduation ends hogwarts is attacked by the remaining death eaters or a new dark lord, aurors harry potter and Ron weasly show up and fend them off your friends (introduced in the tutorial) are killed and you have to protect the younger students from the dark wizards. afterward harry asks you to join the aurors after your performance dealing with the dark wizards, you accept and become an auror. the game is spent fighting off the dark wizards gaining allies protecting safe houses, government buildings, etc. and attempting do defeat this enemy group.the dungeons could be capturing locations for the war effort, and raids could be defeating the generals of the opposing side.

if this is a two faction gamethen you could refuse harry's offer and join the enemy resulting in the same style of gameplay fortheother side. the PVP could be faction vs faction focusing on capturing bases (rush type gamemode), battling the enemy forces (TeamDeathMatch) and securing/destroying evacuation routes for bystanders (map control). classes could be the different houses (gryffindor-defence against the darkarts spells, slytherin-dark arts, hufflepuff-charms, ravenclaw-transifuration) with the proffesions being potion making, growing weapon like plants (devil's snare, womping willows, etc.), potion making plants (butober, dittany, snragaluff, etc.), animal traing (dragons, hippogryphs etc.), wand making, etc.
