The Interview release cancelled because of hacking attacks

So Sony was targeted by hackers calling themselves "the Guardians of Peace" (really?), who leaked tons of private emails talking about lots of different movie-related things from the studio. Apparently the hackers were related to North Korea, who claimed they did it because of The Interview getting released, a comedy/satire about North Korea and an attempted assaination attempt on Kim Jong-Un. They went on to threaten any cinema releasing the movie, so Sony cancelled the New York gallapremiere, which then led to some cinema chains backing out. Now Sony has completely cancelled the release, and the terrorists won.

    Thoughts?

EDIT: Apparently there is another thread in General Off-Topic, which is odd, but whatever.http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/...w-quot-release

They obviously thought the movie would bomb at the box office, otherwise they wouldn't pull it.

If that's not the case, then they're just cowards.

They had already made and marketed the movie, there's no way they could lose money from releasing it.

If Sony thought they were going to be able to get an inflammatory movie like this out there without any backlash they were fooling themselves. That seems to be the case based on how unprepared for it they were.

That said, I'm not sure, once the threats were out, that they could've done much different; they told theaters they weren't obligated to show the movie, heard back in the negative from a large number of them, and decided to cancel when no one was interested.

I really want to see this movie, it has great potential to be hilarious. I hope it's released somewhere at some point.

EDIT: Apparently Sony has no plans about releasing the movie at any point, not even DVD or VoD. Freaking heck. Is the american government not concerned that terrorist threats can do something like this?
