Congress passed the Death in Custody Reporting Act of 2013 last week. So now whenever someone dies in police custody, or during an arrest, there will be a federal record.
I'm a little surprised this wasn't already a thing.

I looked it up one day, police self report that there are 400 citizens killed by police each year. Scholars and private organizations say it's more like a 1,000.
Be nice to get some stats like race, how many prior convictions, etc.

While I am one for punishing criminals, I see problems with how police departments create unsanitary and dangerous facilities.
Jail should not be a nice place, but it should also be somewhere people don't fear staph and TB infections.
Was looking for numbers on this a while ago, was very surprised that they didn't keep a proper record like most other modern countries... Good to see they finally will.
