Jon Irenicus, Marcello from DQ 8, Masaji Kato, Lezard Valeth, the queen from Ico. Few others who don't spring to mind too.

Irenicus is probably the best though.

    2. Kefka from FF6
    3. Ghandi from Civ.

Oh that is easy, GLaDOS the coolest villain ever.

For me personally I always admired Mannoroth and Tichondrius from Warcraft III RoC. Mannoroth is reckless, bloodthirsty, warmongering beast who slaughters for pleasure while Tichondrius is a cunning agent always thinking before executing his next move and very successful.

Kefka is my favorite. You never feel sorry for him, you know a little about why he is the way he is, but all of that really doesn't matter.

There are some other great ones as well. I really liked Wesker in Resident Evil because you knew he was a badass but could never really figure out exactly what he was ultimately up too, at least in the first few games anyway.

Probably the most terrifying villain in any game I've played is Nemesis in Resident Evil 3. It really made me uneasy playing that game when that mother fucker would come out of nowhere, combined with the fixed camera angles designed for maximum shitting your pants effect.

Good villains are ultimately ones you scream fuck you when you're killing them. Either because they were written well, or are so fucking annoying/hard that they are satisfying to kill. Frog was my favorite character in Chrono Trigger and despite knowing why Magus did the things he did, I always cut that mother fucker down. Then again I usually never saved Crono either so Frog could get the main spotlight, that mute fuck.

    Oh, videos too!

Bad quality because it's from the PS2 version, but still. Honestly, Adachi sounds quite a bit like a few of the posters here

Also another villain I'm surprised to not see is Bowser honestly. Even if he's rather simple, he's definitely up there for me.

    Also this guy:

All the gods kept Zeb imprisoned for giving knowledge to mortals. When players attempt to finally free Zeb after millennia, the head goddess reordered time and space at the last moment so he'd never be free. But Zeb gave no-shits and still managed to usurp the gods.

Sephiroth (Final Fantasy 7) - Yeah, yeah.... "Cliche" but he was a total badass and a villain that was both mysterious and one you truly felt afraid of.

Arthas (World of Warcraft) - Such an iconic character. I got into Warcraft with WC3 and the Wrath expansion was my favorite. When I beat LK and got invincible I felt like I beat the game.

Psycho Mantis (Metal Gear Solid) - Really cool character and one of the most interesting mechanics ever.

Smithy (Super Mario RPG) - One of my all time favorite games, this boss fight was pretty challenging.

General Raam (Gears of War) - My personal favorite badass boss.

In no particular order, my runner ups are:

GLaDOS- Sarcastic, vengeful, evil. But she just wanted to test!

Arthas- Slow corruption of someone otherwise destined to be a paragon of virtue.
For the most part done very well.

Andrew Ryan- Loved to hate this guy. Though beating him to death felt hollow
    somehow.

Winner: Joker (Arkham series)- Screws loose, the perfect foil, a joy to hunt down.

Arthas is probably the best villain ever in gaming. His story is told really well, tragic throughout and a satisfying conclusion. The small intricacies to the story as well make it all the better. The concept that a piece of his noble soul is still trapped there and is all that prevent the scourge from ravaging the world really resonates with people that even with the greatest intentions as Arthas did love his people and his kingdom, we can all fall from grace but still hang on just barely to do the right thing.

Handsome Jack is probably my favorite to listen to, his comedy and writing are great.

Luca Blight - quite possibly the most evil SoB I've ever fought. Takes being riddled with arrows, 3 5 man groups, more arrows and a duel to finally put him down. Now that's Hardcore.

Harbinger - most people insist that Sovereign was more menacing and all Harb was good for was coming up with internet memes. But that VOICE. And hearing him "Assuming Direct Control" while on the hardest difficulty tends to make one shit themself.

Kefka - I'll be the one to say it. Sephiroth is overated. If he wasn't in the first 3D FF he'd have been forgotten long ago. He TRIED to become a god. Kefka BECAME one, and he all but destroyed the planet as an afterthought. This guy, as they say, gives no fucks.

He did destroy the planet. Several times. He would destroy it, let them rebuild, then destroy it again. For no more reason then..because he could.

    With that being said

    1: Kefka
    2: Giygas
    3: Zog
If what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. Then I should be a god by now.

    Joker (Arkham series) easily.

Followed by Handsome Jack and Vaas. Power means nothing to me. The best villains are those with a few screws loose.

The only reason Sephiroth failed while Kefka succeeded is because Sephiroth faced much stiffer opposition than Kefka did. Actually, the defeat of Sephiroth can be credited to Rufus more than anyone else. Without his giant laser cannon bringing down the barrier around the Northern Crater Sephiroth would have won. Cloud and co were also much more powerful and relentless in their pursuit of Sephiroth. Terra and co basically handed divinity to Kefka on a silver platter when they agreed to open the doorway to the land of the Espers. If they'd simply let the Espers burn the Empire to the ground Kefka would have lost, but the heroes defeated themselves with their lack of foresight.

That is because in the end, he actually won against you. You didn't beat him to death, He made you beat him to death. You didn't hit him with that golf club yourself he made you do it. He could have killed you, he could have ordered you to kill yourself, he could have lived. In the end he made the choice to die there. He truly was a bad ass villain.

That's been my thought. Throughout the twist montage thing, I just kept mumbling
    "yousonofabitch" over and over.
