I'm at 80-90 mbps which is really only 10ish megs per sec and doesn't feel fast at all.

This is my internet out here in rural Texas.

I pay 60$ for the last one and seldom get even 1 MB, definitely not when all the nerds get back from work.

Even the lowest package our provider offers has 30 MB.

My (European) husband had a similar response to my "high speed" internet option back where I lived in the US. It was the highest available, can't remember exactly what it was but I think it was less than what this thread is stating.

No, but it means they need to provide at least 25 mbps if they want to call it broadband.

Good change overall, although next step should be to reclassify ISP's as common carriers.

If I ever was to move into the city, it'd be for the idea alone that there's fiber over at Austin.

They were planning to roll fiber out where I live but it's been two years and they haven't even finished the first section, neither of the two internet providers where I live.

The other dedicated ISP we have offers the same speeds for a higher price and hasn't changed it in over three years. I don't even understand how the broadban game works but those two are my only options besides satellite.

edit:I actually checked it and it does offer faster speeds but... http://www.lvwifi.com/pricing/

Too bad this doesn't mean jack shit for me. The ONLY internet I can get is verizon's 4g. We pay about 120 bucks a month for 30gb of data. Most people I know use that in a couple of a days on a much cheaper but faster connection. No one wants to come out to where I live, although 3 miles in any directions results in cable internet. I've written the verizon wireless CEO plenty of times telling him he's a piece of shit along with his shitty, dumbass employees and his secretary responds with "sorry we don't take advice from customers."

never work support for an ISP...ever ever ever
They could just use MBs as their sale number instead of Mbps, but then they couldn't take advantage of ignorant customers by letting them think they are getting a much faster speed than they really are. Because lets face it 25Mbps sounds like a lot more than 3.125MB/s. Then again that would be expecting billionaires to care about not taking advantage of the ignorant. Which lets face it that is the name of the game.

Yeah...Wireless is trash. I worked as a onsite tech for a wireless internet provider for a couple years. Was terrible. Internet in rural area is rough.

    Interweb Lumps!

It's not -really- there to trick people. But certainly to avoid the volume of call ins from people whining that they're not getting their full 3MB/s from every site and location all the time.

Again it's nothing to do with deception. It's about describing what they can reliably provide. An ISP (unless they're utter shit) can provide a relatively consistent bandwidth to their customers. But they cannot guarantee actual download speeds out of their control.

    Data limits are satan!
But soon after Mr Xi secured a third term, Apple released a new version of the feature in China, limiting its scope. Now Chinese users of iPhones and other Apple devices are restricted to a 10-minute window when receiving files from people who are not listed as a contact. After 10 minutes, users can only receive files from contacts.
Apple did not explain why the update was first introduced in China, but over the years, the tech giant has been criticised for appeasing Beijing.

I only had 3Mbit before, so I didn't even have broadband. I wasn't aware that "Broadband" was 4Mbps+, lol. I wonder if my ISP still advertises it as broadband. I know they did at one time.. I need to check that, esp now.

It's the Gibibites issue all over again!
It is by caffeine alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the beans of Java that thoughts acquire speed, the hands acquire shakes, the shakes become a warning.

The internet providers in your area sure like using buzzwords to describe mediocre connections.

The speed alone is rough, coupled with any kind of inclement weather and you're looking at power outages/flickers knocking you or your computer offline. It's getting bad where I'm from. Even some high speed winds can knock your power off. We used to have to reset the internet every time it went off, else it wouldn't be accessible.
