There's no in-game add-ons or damage meter. However, the combat log can be read by an external program. Look up a program called Parsec. It will show the damage meters for yourself, and anyone from your group who connects to the same channel.

Just like Rohan said Parsec will let you have an individual dps meter along with a Raid DPS meter. I likw Parsec that along with the meter it gives you a in window log of your damage dealt and see misses crits and other stuff

This is what I dislike most: there's no way to see how well you are actually playing. Okay, for healers and tanks that is easier: hold aggro, keep people alive. But for dps? I want to know whether I'm pulling my own weight or just getting carried.

While I'm totally into theorycraft and pushing the last 1%. How having a dps meter during fight helps you in any way ?
I don't play swtor since long ago (was subbed during 6 month at launch). But even in WoW I close skada during pulls. Give your best, watch result after.
Do you need to see yourself 6th to start to dps ? And when you are first you take the lazy way of not giving your max ?

    DPS is simple : always.give.100%
rotation and stat priority should be fixed/looked before being in any relevent PVE content.

Oh come on. The answer should be pretty obvious: a dps meter tells if you are doing something wrong. Without it there's no way of telling how optimal your rotation is, and I don't like to rely blindly on some pre-set theorycrafting. Knowing exactly what's going on helps you improve your performance.

"Give 100%" means absolutely nothing if you can't be sure of how well you are doing. You might believe you are giving 100%, while you might actually be doing something horribly wrong.

As he said "watch result after", you can run the logs to determine optimal, rather than watching a meter during a fight.

This is the very question I was just about to look for or make a thread about , seems a bit strange to just hope your damage is good or at least not really bad next to everybody else , it does feel like playing in the dark , but since atm I am just playing the story of the class missions I don't really mind , its if I was going to join an opps run , I would like to at least not get carried.

Parse your damage or healing or threat using a third party parser like, Starparse or whatever one you prefer.

See what you are doing in game, instantly. If you want to compare it to others, get them into your parse group, if they say, "screw you" then compare your parse to leader boards and gamers geared similar to you.

It's all rather easy really if you want to know how you are doing and the way BW put it into the individuals hands, it's all on the gamer to find out what they need to and keeps out the ones that only want to flaunt numbers before the boss is even down.

If you're in a progression group, they will all most likely be in a parser with you so you can see everyone anyway. If it's a pug then it's up the gamer to participate or not but you can still get your numbers if you want.

You should know how to do your rotation optimally before a big fight, that's what dummies are for. If you have to look at your DPS meter mid fight to know you're doing something wrong..... you're doing it wrong. That's not to say checking your meter to how you're doing isn't OK, but it shouldn't be an indicator as to whether you're messing up or not.

Damage meter has an add-on is useful for the type of player that only jumps into a flashpoint once in a while, someone that doesn't try to optimize 100% but likes to see if they are really are doing some meaningful damage at all.
For example, I play this game very casually, so I don't want to be bothered to use a parser to know if I got carried for the odd flashpoint I did while levelling. I wouldn't mind having a dps meter to see, while on a flashpoint, whether it's a boss fight or a trash pack, if my damage is ok or not.

If I understand you correctly, most parse programs allow you to real time DPS numbers but just for you. No naming and shaming unless they want to be apart of your DPS group.

If all you want to do is see your numbers from time to time, watch your numbers get better as you get better or even later check out a leade rboard to see how you are really doing. Then it's possible with a parser.

I know TORparse used to be like that and will likely be again once the owner gets it back up and running but starparse also has real-time DPS meters too. There are some others out there too that I have not tried but I bet they work similar.

Im not a bad player but my opinion is that dmg meters defeats the purpose of gaming or however you say it in english so I hope there isnt.

Believe it or not, lack of dps meter in swtor one of big reasons I stopped playing it. No, parser is not good enough, cant compare my output with others.
After being used to dps meters in wow for years, just cant enjoy group content without it.

You can compare your damage, healing or threat with others as long as they give you permission or give a shit about it long enough to use it. Our groups use it all the time and use it in game while we play. Some have great overlays.

Something like star parse is more than enough for what you need.

What's really great about using a parser is those that do not always need or want to care don't have to and those that want to gloat can go "f" themselves but a parser I'm finding give more than enough data if you want to use it.

"As they give you permission" is problem here. As PuG player, thats not an option.
