I have very bad experiences with both the R9 280 (MSI) and 290 (Gigabyte) and would suggest going for the Nvidia 970/980.
Then again, I had bad experiences with a Nvidia 8800GTX, and no issues whatsoever with a Radeon 9800 XT.
