Even a few years back that wasn't the case.
Maybe like.. 8 years ago, when they were made from crap software/hardware and only 8gb...
SSD's now have an expected lifetime of .. well.. longer than yours. This is not an exaggeration.

About 4 years ago I upgraded my laptop, gaming PC and husbands work PC with SSD's. Two were 120Gb OCZ Agility III's, the other a 256Gb Crucial M4.
Of the Agility III's, one failed after a week, becoming totally unrecognisable by the bios, the other failed in the same way after about a year. The Crucial M4 however is still going strong. Perhaps the Agility III's came from a bad batch, but I will never buy OCZ products again. I am still impressed with the Crucial drive though.
Sure I have had hard drives fail in the past, after several years, but to have a 2 out of 3 failure rate with the SSD's is pretty disappointing.

Kingston HyperX 3K SSD 120GB from 2012 - died in 2013
Crucial M4 60GB / 256GB from late 2012 - still alive
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB from 2013 - still alive
I've had 6 HDDs die on me in the meantime, 5/6 being Western Digital

OCZ Agility 3 240GB and a Vertex 3 MI 120GB from 2011 still going strong.
Don't know the makes, but a buddy of mine with a dedicated minecraft server running linux had His crash like a year into using it.
Another friend's Custom Win 7 machine, again, Don't know the brands sorry - Had His fail after about a year.
Again, this thread is about failure, not success. SSD's have been used in Satellites for a LONG time, and they are STILL running, like 40 years later+++
SSD is the way to go.
While I see that many have failed. I also don't think any of these have failed in the way alluded to that's specific to SSDs. Namely that they ran out of read/writes. Everything I've read is that that specific failure is really a non issue unless you're doing something like running a heavy load database or something off of it.
I had a OCZ Vertex 2 for about 3 years before it crapped out. I was getting errors and files were becoming corrupted and stuff so I removed it from my system. I haven't had any problems since. I do plan on trying another SSD when I build a new system. Hopefully I have better luck next time.
I also think people need to make a distinction between
"Failure from use" and "Failure from defects/damage"
Also not surprised the OCZ drives died. Not only did they have huge problems early on, but its probably in part to what led the company going under.

Corsair Force GS 250GB from 2012 and Samsung 840 Pro 256GB from 2013 are both alive and well.
Never had a HDD or SSD "die" on me. Even my old 160GB Maxtor HDD still keeps on trucking with 2 reallocated sectors.
Currently using: Intel 520 series 120GB, Total NAND writes about 9TB.
However i witnessed the SSD of my mentor die (ofc RIGHT in the moment I plugged in my thumb drive to show him some solidworks data lol).... he didn't have a backup. :X

I present to you The SSD Endurance Experiment.
Personally, I have a 120GB Intel 510 that's still at 92% of its rated lifespan after almost four years of constant use, first in my main PC and now in my laptop. The 100GB OCZ Vertex 2 in my mom's laptop is going strong after about four years, and I got that one refurbished. Both 120GB Intel 520s here at work are still looking 96+% lifespan left, and they're used for light/moderate database work with a lot of tiny writes.
I remember an Anandtech writer commenting about six months ago that his original X25-M from 2008 is still running strong.
EDIT: Meanwhile, my (large) collection of hard drives grows thinner every few months.

I had a mushkin mSata ssd fail on me in my media pc, but that was mostly due to a combination of user error and faulty NUC design. Other than that my, original intel x-25 is still trucking along and my newer corsairs haven't had any issue.
Surprising.
My Crucial m4 128GB with many rewrites of the entirity of Windows, as well as big games like WoW and Steam on it... still going since 2011.
Also a Crucial m500 250GB, Crucial m550 120GB, and Crucial MX100 512GB from 2014 still obviously going.

So far none of them have died, there are a few other 60gb ssd's somewhere still working to my knowledge.
