Gabe Newell basically confirms no Half-Life 3

"The only reason we'd go back and do like a super classic kind of product is if a whole bunch of people just internally at Valve said they wanted to do it and had a reasonable explanation for why [they did]."

    I knew it.

I've been saying for years that I really doubted they've done any work on it and that they seem to have no interest in it.

lets face it there isn't anything they could make that would satisfy the hype train for a hl3.

with the amount of open world games today, i don't think another linear half-life would really be that great. i mean hl1 was good because there was nothing better, hl2 gave the same thing physics, what else is there, open world, but that wouldn't really fit the linear story driven approach.

to be fair i had more fun playing half life mods than actually playing half life.

spent so much time playing things like Natural selection, the specialists, cs, battlegrounds etc etc.

What is Newell talking about? He referenced Portal 2 and what they learned from that as evidence of why revisiting old an series is bad? What? Portal 2 received universal acclaim and sold 4 million copies? How is that an example of what not to do?

I still think they will make it eventually.

    this ^
They could release a 1000 Carat Diamond and it will probably be considered "mediocre" because the hype for Half Life 3 is so high that transcend reality by a large margin

It takes a big set of balls to leave a series on a massive cliff hanger with no intention of continuing it.

It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth when they promise a continuation (with Episode 3) and then just abandon the whole thing.

In terms of multiplayer, in that people generally tend to play more multiplayer than singleplayer, I would imagine.

I still think they'll do something with Half Life at some point, but I stopped speculating/waiting years ago. It will come if/when it does.

They do it in TV all the time.

The market place is very different from when HL2 was a thing.

IMO I sort of respect companies that decide to just leave good things as they are even though they know a sequel or the IP would rake in tons of money.

HL3 might be best left to people's imaginations.

Look at what happened to D3 when after 10 years there's no way the game would live up to the fantasy players developed in that time. Sometimes when things are good, just let them be good, and don't use the name to milk money.

Look at Saw, the first one was ok, and just went downhill.

Jurassic Park 1 good, 2 ok, 3 bad

    TMNT 1 good, 2 good, 3 wtf

For creators I think they need to just make stuff when it "feels right" and not when they are trying to fill a demand. I agree with Gabe, if at some point they see VR and they get excited about something with it for a HL3... make it. But just because HL2 was good, doesn't mean you should fudge something out for HL3 if the goal is tainted (making $)

That being said I will still yell at SquareEnix forever for a FF7 remake even though it has no chance of being as good.

I don't see why they would choose to go open world then. I'm sure the fans would appreciate a cohesive story over a theme park romp.

I think they could do something with it, but now they have to compete with games like gta V or the witcher 3 or skyrim. lots of games have taken everything that made hl1 and hl2 successful and simply put their own spin on it, like physics after hl2 came out it was pretty much the age of physics in games.

now though that role is reversed they have to look at what everyone else is doing and some how bring something to the table that feels like half life but isn't just the same old. again though even though both halflifes were great it isn't really those games we're praising really its the diverse modding community that sprang up around them and gave the same game vast re-playability, it was like buying one game and getting 20. (or at least 3-5 decent variations)

also of note is that the world editor is extremely user friendly, i haven't loaded up hammer for years now but i think i could fire it up and whip up a half decent FY_ in a day.

The hype is too big at this point, there is no game that could possibly satisfy nearly enough of all the people that want half life 3.

That's a bit of a hoop. HL1 was ground breaking in terms of scripts affecting game but there were loads and loads of good shooters, many which I consider above HL1 by far, most notably Dark Forces II Jedi Knight which holds greatly to this date. Hell, even the story of it is kinda awesome in it's camp feel.

yeah it was the modifiability that really gave it the surge of success. I can only really remember playing diablo 2 at the time, i didn't even have 56k internet until cs 1.4 i think it was. had to go to the lan cafe and play death match there. other games they had there were things like total annihilation and maybe quake 2 i can't even remember if unreal tournament was that popular, i mostly only remember playing tac ops for that with bots..

    So... Half Life 3 confirmed?

I prefer developers to rise up to the challenge of massive hype. Blizzard failed with original D3 but at least they learned something. Valve has been playing safe for too long with many of CS games and Dota2. It's no fun.

Valve has made masterpieces, I'll give them that, but they aren't masters. They'd never be able to make a HL3 that'd live up to the expectations that have developed in the gaming pop culture.

Half-Life 3 mentioned 3 times in the headline and article. HL3 confirmed.

The shitstorm that would arise from Valve failing to deliver the HL3 people want would be spectacular to observe.
