Imo Ulduar's way of doing "hard mode" was the best way to do "heroic/mythic" style content. Makes more sense in lore, and it imo its feels alot cooler to do a fight drastically different rather then pressing a button (hurr hurr mimiron) to make it harder.

"Do you want our help hero?"

"Nah, I want to get more phat lootz!"

    Makes total sense.

Not only was Ulduar ambitious in scale, novel in appearance and encounter design, it was the direct culmination of an entire zone and two dungeons. You knew the villains, you knew the would-be heroes, and you were either emotionally or at least mentally invested in the morally compelling outcome.

Oh, Blizzard loved its craft back then. Want heartstrings tugged? Go back to Thunderfall and walk among the frozen legacy of Krolmir.

You lost me there. Ulduar was about exploration and mystery which was directly tied in with you NOT knowing any of the villains or characters (except Thorim). This tripped itself up because since you didn't really know anything about Yogg except he was some corrupty old god guy, your motivation for taking him down was simply because he was the end boss.

That's not correct in the slightest. Revisit Storm Peaks quest lines especially, plus the Freya encounter in Sholazar and both Halls of Stone and Halls of Lightning.
