First time going to Europe, suggestions?

So I'm finally getting a chance to get my southern ass out of the state's and to see a different part of the world. We are doing London, Paris and Amsterdam for sure, and considering driving from Paris to Amsterdam and stopping in Aachen. What recommendations do y'all have for a first timer? Think we are doing 2 days in London, 3 in Paris and 2 in Amsterdam with one day for the stop in Aachen.

Have a good time that's the best advice. See the sights, taste the food, and respect the culture. Do not be one of those guys who ruins art (happens in Italy by tourists pretty often ~_~)

Why would you go to Aachen? o.O

The only thing mentionable is the old church from the 9th century if you are into that stuff. Nothing else.

Go in the summer, if you're going to northern Europe.

I went to Scotland and Ireland in October. The first piece of advice I'll give you is to watch out for ATM fees, money transaction fees, and credit card fees. Don't change your money in at the airport, it's a rip off. The bank can be a rip off too. We bank at Bank of America and those debit cards are good at any Barclay's bank without a fee. Our Capitol One card also didn't have any fees. Find out the best, least expensive way to exchange your money. 3% may not seem like a lot, but it'll add up.

Definitely going to have fun and do my best on respecting the culture. I'm excited for the experience for sure.

As far as Aachen, I think Charlemagne's chapel is a stop we were taking about making for shits and giggles, that and to see the Ardenn forest (think I spelled that right).

10 days and pretty flexible on the budget. Not trying to get crazy with the cheez wiz, but not really a big issue. I kinda want to see all I can in the limited time, cities and country. That's part of the reason we're driving from Paris to Amsterdam. We were thinking about stopping in Bruges, but my brother in law kind of wants to see the cathedral in Aachen.

Sounds like a fun trip but be sure about that your schedule is really tight. Maybe there is a possibility to prolong your trip for some more days or decrease the locations you visit? I mean you will arrive at London with a Jet lag being tired and feel exhausted. The city is really big and there is a lot of stuff to to do and look at, you'll probably walk a lot around and won't have much time to recuperate. Maybe you wanna get wasted in an english pub, like i did there and boom it may be be hard to really enjoy the trip rushing from one country/city to the next, spending much of your precious time in the air or at airports respectively on roads in the middle of nowhere.

Just my thoughts of course, if I was in your shoes.

Aside from that, just go there and experience it. Most people in northern/middle european countries got reasonable english skills so there won't be that much of a language barrier.

then you should visit the cathedral of Cologne/Köln instead... just one hour to the east from Aachen:

Don't get me wrong it's "nice". But their is so much more to visit (if you want to stop in Germany, stop in Berlin for exemple).

What is an Aachen and whilst you're in London try not to buy anything as it's stupidly expensive but also probably the best place in the world so it's a balancing act.

If you like art go to the "Rijksmuseum" in Amsterdam. You can also visit the "Oude kerk" in Amsterdam(Really big church) that way you can have some extra time and not go to Aachen. Tourists also like to take a boat through the canals or visit the Anna Frank house.

And just my advice(as a Dutch guy) incase you want to go and do drugs in Amsterdam... Go and buy/do it in a official Coffeeshop and dont buy it random. Also stick to weed, some nasty stuff is going on with guys sellings white heroine as coke.. And besides that all drugs except for weed are illegal here.

Suggestions, now, this might sound bad but... if you see beggars, don't give them money. Most aren't really poor, they're faking it. Also watch your pockets in Paris and Amsterdam, thieves love foreigners. Better safe than sorry. I'm ashamed to say that many of these thieves and beggars come from my country... which is why you should visit Romania! Most thieves have left and we have beautiful landscapes, castles, and a rich history Plus, it's really cheap to get a great vacation here.

If you go to Paris and order some beers, check the prices first. Some places won't mind adding a secret foreigner tax.

My wife and I are going with my brother and sister in law, and they've been a couple of times already, so it's something he wants to do while making the drive from Paris to Amsterdam. I don't think him or I would be against stopping in Berlin, not sure about the women. I'm not sure what the distance between all of them are and they seem pretty set on "taking a drive through the countryside" after we leave Paris.
