Hey brilliant and wise smarty pantses of MMO Champion. I am the raid leader of my 9/10 Heroic BRF team, and am posting for a few of our members to try and improve their DPS output as we prepare for the checks of Mythic. I would very much appreciate ANY tips or suggestions you can give to the Combat Rogue. Here are two log examples, one from a farm night where his rotation is more solid, and one from heroic Blackhand where he is less comfortable and thus struggles to maintain the rotation.
I don't know rogues AT ALL so am asking kindly for you to all chip in and offer some refinement tips. What is he not doing (enough)? What should he change up? Is there hope for him??
I updated the original post to reflect the correct URL.
Although I can suggest he try sub for single target bosses, I am looking at BRF as a whole and his current spec choice is Combat. The top link is from the first 9 bosses of BRF. Any suggestions for combat, including all fights + Blackhand?
There are some strange things I noticed. For example, he seems to have activated Blade Flurry on Beastlord and then NEVER TURNED IT OFF. That is ludicrous. The DPS loss from having BF active on single target is shattering, but I'd be even more concerned about a raider who would overlook such a crucial and above all elementary component of their spec. Are you using some weird strategy where you have 2+ targets up for the ENTIRE fight? Doesn't seem likely.
Looking further, this issue seems to continue in other fights. On Thogar for example he turned BF off only ONCE, and spent 82% of the fight with it on - I highly doubt that there were adds to cleave 82% of the time.
What is most concerning however is something else. He got hit - and often killed - by extremely avoidable abilities. Hans/Franz presses. Kromog Thundering Blows. Gruul Overwhelming Blows AND Overhead Smash. Maiden bombs. Beastlord fire on the ground. Impale on Blackhand outside of P3.
Blackrock Foundry is an instance that is HIGHLY demanding of personal awareness and performance. If you want to get into Mythic you CANNOT afford players that are unable to deal with core mechanics, and avoid damage that is extremely avoidable.
Overall this just seems to be a player who needs to work on his raid awareness - in terms of enemy abilities, but also his own. Not turning BF on/off properly is the ABSOLUTE BASICS of playing Combat Rogue. It is literally the one thing the spec is good for. Failing on the central, core ability of the spec is not a good sign.
I just looked at one Blackhand attempt, and there are some glaring errors. The biggest of which seems to be that he is using Adrenaline Rush before Killing Spree. Combat rogues have a passive that reduces the cooldown of Adrenaline Rush and Killing Spree for every combo point spent on a finisher. If you burn through all of the combo points generated from Adrenaline Rush while Killing Spree is off cooldown, you just wasted a HUGE opportunity to use and quickly reset a big source of damage.
It seems like he just lacks a basic understanding of how the spec works. If I were you, I'd point him to a site like Ravenholdt.net and just ask him to read through the guide. Just getting the basics down will do wonders for him.
Thank you so much for the honest feedback, that is exactly what I need as a raid leader. He seems like a great person who really wants to improve, and these are very easy and obvious ways to do so. I will pass along the message and bench him from progression core for now. If you can find anything else in the logs, big or small, please let me know so I can pass it along and help him improve as much as possible, whether we end up using him or not. Thank you again, you guys all rock to take the time out of your day to help us out.
Even though his average ilvl is 681, his weapons are still 665. Getting some better weapons and exercising greater discretion of when BF should be active should really help him get his dps up.
Oh and not dying all of the time. He may need to go ahead and spec Cheat Death.
---edit---
Along with paying more attention to what's going on in a fight. He died on ~half of the fights, and only a few minutes or less into them. His situational awareness needs to improve greatly.
