Iran Agrees to Framework of Nuclear Deal

    US government fact sheet: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2015/04/240170.htm

An outline agreement on the future shape of Iran's nuclear programme has been reached after marathon talks with six major powers in Switzerland.
Under the deal, Iran will reduce its uranium enrichment capacity in exchange for phased sanctions relief.
US President Barack Obama said a "historic understanding" had been reached with Iran.
The world powers and Iran now aim to draft a comprehensive nuclear accord by 30 June.
The framework agreement was announced by the European Union and Iran after eight days of negotiations in Lausanne.
The talks between the so-called P5+1 - the US, UK, France, China and Russia plus Germany - and Iran at Lausanne's Beau-Rivage Palace hotel continued beyond the original self-imposed deadline of 31 March.
    ...
According to a US factsheet issued after the talks, the outline deal includes the following conditions:

    • Iran will reduce its installed centrifuges - used to enrich uranium - by two-thirds and reduce its stockpile of low-enriched uranium
    • The centrifuges that are no longer in use will be placed in storage, monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
    • All of Iran's nuclear facilities will be subject to regular IAEA inspections
    • Iran will redesign its heavy-water reactor in Arak so that it cannot produce weapons-grade plutonium
    • US and EU sanctions related to Iran's nuclear programme will be lifted in phases, but can be brought back if Iran does not meet its obligations.

Mr Obama said the deal's implementation would be closely watched. "If Iran cheats, the world will know it," he said, adding that the deal was based not on trust but on "unprecedented verification".
Anyone else surprised that Russia didn't scupper this somehow? I'm actually impressed!

Positive news for the world at last, except maybe Mr. I-can-win-an-infinite-number-of-political-terms-how-come-you-cant Netanyahu...

US presidents in their last 2 years ALWAYS are lame ducks and selfishly seek to pad their resume for the history books with some sort of foreign policy achievement. The reasoning is, that being a lame duck makes it impossible to advance a domestic agenda, so its simply easier to get something done abroad.

Bill Clinton did something similar in 2000 with the Camp David summit between Ehud Barak and Yasser Arafat.

There is nothing meaningful here. A "framework" for a deal will be lauded by people who have a vested interest in making President Obama look like a good president. As we have learned NUMEROUS times with weapons inspections with Iraq, Iran could at any time simply break the deal and go back to doing whatever it is they were doing. Maybe the US will put sanctions back on...or maybe the US will wimp out and keep some / all the sanctions off when it happens.

There's really nothing binding here at all. Its window dressing on a two term presidency.

Well, the sanctions weren't preventing Iran from making nuclear weapons. If they agree not to make nuclear weapons and allow inspectors in I think that's better than what we had.

Iran will reduce its installed centrifuges - used to enrich uranium - by two-thirds and reduce its stockpile of low-enriched uranium
Iran can just claim they've been reduced.

The centrifuges that are no longer in use will be placed in storage, monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
    Iran can just make more.

All of Iran's nuclear facilities will be subject to regular IAEA inspections
Inspectors can be bought. Inspectors can be mislead. Inspectors can be kept out. Inspectors cant inspect facilities they don't know exist.

Iran will redesign its heavy-water reactor in Arak so that it cannot produce weapons-grade plutonium
Iran can do this and then hide another heavy water rector somewhere else.

US and EU sanctions related to Iran's nuclear programme will be lifted in phases, but can be brought back if Iran does not meet its obligations.
Sanctions come off immediately, Iran has years to comply with their end ...or just not.

    Nuclear terrorist attack incoming.

Did you really just compare this to Iraq? The world truly is a safer place that we rid Iraq of all those WMDs huh?

I can easily forsee a situation where the US is forced to choose between a so called "ally" in the Middle East, like Saudi Arabia, which has probably caused more pain to the US and the West directly and indirectly ever than any other country from that region, and a so called "enemy", i.e. Iran, which has never started a war with anyone, let alone the West, in over 200 years.

One gives unprecedented, full and transparent access plus control over the heart of a sovereign state, i.e. its ability to make weapons and energy for itself, to the whole international community.

The other creates, dominates and funds a "United Arab Army" in the region, a so-called Arab NATO, as well as ideologically and monetarily support ISIS. Nominally this Arab NATO is aimed at Iran, but of course that can change at any time (hello, Israel and your supporters)...

Regardless, any military-industrial complexes are certain now to lose one of their biggest bogeymen. They won't let that last for long!

Oh, and also Israel has effectively just lost its "Begin Doctrine" for pre-emptive attacks against Iran, something it does with impunity on a regular basis against other countries...

But the bolded part is reality. Quite annoying when it doesn't line up with your narrative eh?

Are you seriously this stupid or does it require some kind of effort to keep such stupidity going?
