So called designer breeds like puggles and labradoodles. It's retarded. The main thing that demands more money is that your dog has a pedigree. Sure, the parents might have papers, but the pup won't, no matter how posh or 'designer' you want it to sound/be.

All dogs are mongrels anyway, so who cares? Breeders are scum and they can't guarantee anything to begin with. Papers are easily forged or falsified, as well. People who buy dogs from breeders are fools. There's no such thing as a "pure bred" dog anymore and hasn't been for centuries.

Purposely breeding mutts is beyond unethical. But in the case of an accidental litter, the amount asked by the owner can and should be upwards of a few hundred dollars.

People tend to forget that just about every modern dog breed is a mix of something.

People want non-shedding pugs and beagles. Poodles aren't generally considered a "cool" breed, they're considered foppish despite originally being bred to be working dogs (for fishermen, IIRC? check out the portuguese and spanish water dogs). People'll pay very good money for a look that doesn't come with a stuffed nose and red, itchy eyes for the owner's family.

Here is the thing though, what we consider "pure bread" today was a "designer mutt" at one point. Golden retrievers for instance came about in the 1800s and were only recognized by the UKC in 1903 and the AKC in 1925. My beloved Gordon Setters are believed to be a mixture of spaniel and pointer with a dash of hound.
