No High school for me.. I was a good kid... Never got high at school.
And we don't have high school like the US. Significantly different school system actually.

When I was a kid I loved my birthday because of getting presents. As I got older I no longer expect (or even want) presents on my birthday, and in fact really don't like all the attention about it. I hate being in the spotlight. I'm so happy I found out how to turn off my birthday notification on facebook so I don't get spammed by people on my birthday any more - that really just made me feel uncomfortable.

Depends on the students intellectual qualification and on the interest into the path they want to choose....
No need to go the high route, if your plan is to go the trade skill route instead of University route.
In German society trades are as highly respected (some even more) than academic professions.

Boyfriend can take a guess. He knows its late may, but can't remember. My dad is the same, but always forgets to ask me when it is. Dear lord is so fucking easy to remember it too, there's even a trick to remembering it. Holy fuck it pisses me off sometimes.

I would say it is because after 21 there is no real reason to look forward to it. Unless I am paying attention to the date I don't realize it either. I mean my mom has called me to tell me happy birthday and I was unaware it was that day. I thought it was the following day.
