i believe this concept of an american political spectrum stems from what is called american exceptionalism.

It stems from the simple fact that the US has no true Left, it is a concept that does not really exist here. Thus, American politics is viewed in a relative Left-Right split based off of the American Center. The true Left has ZERO bearing on American politics, so it is natural it is ignored.

Its not ignored. Its used as a boogeyman to rally the "true patriots", "true conservatives", "true Americans" or whatever other self aggrandizing title they want to use this week.

If this was remotely true, there would never be anyone calling Obama socialist or communist, because those have world wide defined locations on a political spectrum. What you are describing is like a con... Where you demand someone runs only 5 miles and then persecute them for running more than 5 kilometers.

U.S. has left, including the Green Party and a socialist in Seattle city council... Actual socialist, not the spot Obama hits on your US version of a political scale...

If in X years US shifts to be an extreme on the left side of the U.S. scale, does that turn Obama into an extreme conservative in history books?

Is a political scale the only scale where the measure definition values keep changing and it's not broken? Because any other scale I can think of, where the same item being measured results in different measurements... would be broken...

It's a con, a ruse, a lie... A trick to confuse people and slander your opponents. He claims that democrats are on the left of the U.S. political scale. But, political rhetoric then apply's it to actual political scale, which results in democrats being called communist and socialist. This is how they scare people with wealth redistribution, police state and all the other bullshit you hear. Democrats are no where near that shit on the actual political scale and things like communism are so far left on his U.S. scale, the scale it self is warped with a sliver of a line on the right and a line on the left extending into infinity...

Zero bearing because most American's have no idea what those ideologies even entail. A boogeyman is generally a make-believe threat, which is what the real left is in the US, make-believe.

The Green Party has about 121 elected officials at ANY level in the US, they have less than 1% of the members of the GOP. They are meaningless.

Its not a con, it is the reality of American politics. As of right now, the actual left has no place in America in the minds of almost all Americans. The only people in the US that complain are the handful of actual left leaning people that know they are politically irrelevant.

History books are written from the perspective of the time they are written.

Most scales are discussed in relative terms. What constitutes "hot" or "cold", "big" or "small", "near" or "far", etc.

Whether Democrats or Republicans are in control, the US government is significantly further right than the vast majority of developed countries.
