Whoa! I haven't seen that in months. Is that an undocumented change, or just a very rare event (early in WoD, somewhat common)?

It's been like that since WoD started. Your guards will kill them.
Originally it was bugged, and your guards would never kill them, and they were always there.
If your mine is full of them, then they just all respawned at the same time while you happened to be there. It happens.

Well ... no, in my Level 2 mine there were a dozen or so squishy goren, and there was absolutely nothing attacking them.
