Is there even any positive result from obnoxious online advertising?

I wonder if people will actually buy/download/order/etc. the stuff that's promoted though obnoxious online advertisement methods!?

For example when you visit a webiste and advertisements open fullscreen. Or even worse, advertisements with sound that suddenly play on max volume.
And then there are the long youtube advertisements that you can't skip...

Will this simply not frustrate people to a point they might even boycot you? (I actually do this myself)
What could the benefit possibly be?

Online advertising guru's and marketing advisors skew numbers during result meetings so u keep paying em to put those adverts up.

Problem is the ROI in analytics never shows, then they throw it on returning visitors AKA people who saw the add and remembered it later making them purchase something directly from the website.

They aren't able to show those numbers so it's thunbsucking, however u can't prove or disprove it. In the meantime "everyone is doing online advertising so so should we" and there it comes full circle.

In your face advertisement/telemarketing etc makes me not buy that product on purpose, sometimes even avoiding the site all together. Someone has to be buying the shit or people wouldn't be doing it

    Subconsciously yes OP.

Of course, I have an ever growing list of products I won't buy if at all possible to avoid..

Advertising works. It's unconscious. "If they can afford to annoy the shit out of me and still make money, they've GOTTA make good stuff to overcome that right?" And yes, I'm joking. I have no solid data to back up my claim.

Same here, if an ad pops up mid screen and I can't just close it, I'm prone to close the tab and not even read or click through the article. Same with video stories, I'll just leave the site if I can't watch what I came for without some f'ing truck advertisement.

Do stupid people exist? Yes. Using the internet without adblock is like walking into a ghetto with a diamond suit.

Considering it has been there for years, yes people are dumb enough to fall for scams and adverts on the internet.

    It makes products more memorable.
Think Barry Scott for example with Cillit Bang.
We tried the product, and personally found it to be underwhelming.
More like a quiet pop than a bang.

OK if everyone is behaving irrationally go and form your own advertising company or just do it online and make a shitload of cash.

This is one of those threads where people form a sort of spontaneous denial of reality cult.

That makes the ad memorable, not the product.

The most annoying ads go on the torrent sites and other sites too popular to boycott. Pornhub knows you'll come back no matter what. Even MMO-C puts up some pretty obnoxious ads.

I use Google ads but they are pretty tame compared to video ads and the "fix your computer" ads I've seen.

I think website people are getting desperate for money. A lot of what I thought were profitable websites are shutting down or laying off people.

The most dangerous ads are the ones you don't notice. Or think you don't notice.

And they're sneaky little a-holes in how they get them in. They mask them as "normal ads" when visited by the host (google, mmo-champ server, curse) IP ranges, but any other IP range gets the shitty flashing sound fullscreen annoying ad. For reference, we have a thread in the Suggestions forum if you encounter an ad here like that.

My company makes money from advertising and I can say that no one here likes obnoxious advertisement. The best advertisement is nicely coupled with relevent content and tucked away nicely enough so it flows with the content itself. I always laugh at those in your face advertisements but the sad truth is that those in your face ads are often the most expensive ones. I feel bad for the suckers who get talked into buying one of those.
