Foreign characters in signatures

Why are these now banned? Haven't had an issue for the past few years that I've had foreign characters in my signature, but now when I try to change my signature it says that the word(s) are censored words. Is there a reason for this?

Spammers were using them in their spam, so we disallowed them.
