    Excessive ads?

I understand ads are great for the site, due to money to keep it up and running, etc, however I was getting consistantly slow loading pages ( Only on MMO-C ), went and ticked the site for ad-block, and it's getting consistantly 10+ ads per page? Site is now running smoothly aswell. Ad block is telling me it's blocking 13-14 ads per page.

    Is this intended? :/

There are 4 ads on most pages, sometimes 5. They load after the site, so they shouldn't have any significant impact on loading pages.

As far as redirects go, when they are reported we can usually kill them very quickly. Unfortunately we only get a handful of reports every month, and usually no more than 1 or 2 with the actual URLs we need to remove them.

Which really sucks if your phone isn't the fastest, because you can't actually hit any forum links or threads until the ads have stopped loading (which can take a while, especially if the internet is being slow), as they shift the content down or to the side when they load.

I may be an exception here, but when I load MMO-C front page on my phone (I just timed this) It takes 8 seconds from the time I hit go until the page is done and visible

however, it takes at least more than double that (18 this time, this is about normal) for the ads to load, and I cant click any link on the front page(I check front page for recent threads) until after this time.. so at least in my own experience, its more than significant, loading the ads literally takes more time than loading the website itself, and does not allow me to interact until then. I try to hit the stop loading button after the page is loaded, but it still remains inaccessible until ads have loaded

Yeah, we know the mobile situation isn't optimal. It is on the todo list. (The real one, not the "maybe one day but not really" one)

That's what everyone says about their "todo list" and I know from experience of managing communities. There will be no change until it's something that can be applied to entire Curse.com conglomerate

It's slow on the good 'ol PC.
Adblock is blocking 16 ads so far yet the forums can still be extremely slow to load.

Hahaha, 13-14 ads per page? That's it?

On this one page here my ad-block says it blocked 30 ads.

It really is ridiculous. They wonder why people use ad-blockers?

EDIT: I just turned off ad-block to see what it looks like. Couldn't find out as the page never fully loaded. Went back to blocking ads.

Those are all the requests that get blocked by my adblocker when refreshing this page. And I'm just using the default filters.

Curse is moving towards mobile sites, check out http://www.muthead.com on a mobile device. Unfortunately we don't use the same software as all of the other sites, so we will take a little longer. It is a factor in google's rankings now, so it is important to us.

Requests aren't the same thing as ads. This thread has one ad at the top, one at the bottom, and one in the footer. You may see far more than 3 requests blocked, but those are just scripts involved in selecting and loading the ads. The thread itself only has 3 ads.

I don't think you understand my point. If those 3 ads were the only requests made, it wouldn't be that big a deal. However, each of those 17 other requests takes time to load the rest of the page. All those extra requests make the page load LITERALLY 6 TIMES SLOWER! It's 2 seconds versus 12 seconds for everything to load, excluding failed requests.

it's like a police officer firing a full gun at a unarmed black dude, only bullet hitting, and the police officer, when being court martialed for gratuitous violence, saying "I only shot him once, all those other rounds were just involved in it."

I'm glad I saw this thread. It reminded me to turn off my ad-block for the site <3

Why would you subject yourself to that?

I gotta give back in my own intended way. I lurv this site and honestly, half the avatars and signatures are more annoying than these ads.

And web devs whine about Adblock being a thing. Go figure.

The requests being blocked are scripts that load content after the page is loaded. We changed them from blocking the page load a long time ago. The page may finally finish loading slower with the ads, but it loads everything other than the ads and renders the page first.

Repeat visits to most pages load in a couple seconds, even with ads. The page continues to load things in the background for ads, but the stuff you are blocking has a very limited impact on the time it takes to load the page enough for you to browse.

I love you Computer Bird, but I think you may be factually incorrect here.

Look at the actual page with it off. Adblock just counts requests, not actual ads that you see.
