Whose to say the kid didn't have enough of the right 'chemicals' in development which prevents them from comfortably existing as the sex they appear as whilst they mature?

Yeah, except labeling it as a disorder doesn't reveal the cause, not to mention the same people who labeled it a disorder will tell you transitioning is the best way to handle that. Beyond that though, DSM V actually threw out Gender Identity Disorder in favor of Gender Dysphoria, which basically means it's only considered a disorder if you experience significant distress.
