Would I be able to control it like it was an extra arm or is it just going to mostly be back there having a life of its own? I don't need it to keep balance, humans already have that sorted. Also it would have to be extremely powerful, and possibly a few meters long, if a full grown human is to swing around in trees with it as if we were monkeys -- so powerful it might be as a weapon.

Do you guys realize what size that tail would have to be to allow a fully grown human with 50-80 kg to dangle from a tree? It would need to be massive, at least the size of one of your arms, probably thicker and more muscular due to the increased joints.
