John Oliver picks on Sex Ed...or the lack of it. With Mike from Breaking Bad

About time someone in mainstream media begins addressing this.

  2. #2
Lol what a coincidence, I literally was just about to watch the latest episode. Like within the next 2 minutes. GL with a 20 minute video though :P might need to tl;dr it for a chance of a decent thread.

OT: I had pretty decent sex ed in highschool, if a little dry. Condom's on anatomically correct, size appropriate penis models (no cucumbers or bananas) a good month or two of learning about different STD's and different kinds of birth control etc... Boys and girls weren't separated (with the girls being taught to put on the condoms as well so they'd know if a guy was doing it properly or pulled the "but I don't know how/I've never worn one before" excuse) It was in Holland though so...

Hopefully with John Oliver's track record, this might result in some improvements on the issue.

Yeah, I absolutely hate it when parents try to bar their children from sex education. Love the end part

I'm surprised he didn't mention porn serves as a better sex ed education than what most schools get.

Basically this, I think some schools are too afraid of the parents to teach the students what they need to know.

Never learned it in school. Luckily my parents are big pervs though, as well as open on basic questions and how to prevent important stuff form occurring.

I really can't imagine a school having that bad of sex education. I guess I'll just assume NY has a good program compared to most states.

    Have you watched the video?

Menstruation makes you better at Bowling.
No demonstration on the use of condoms.
ABSOLUTELY NO MENTIONING ANYTHING RELATED TO INTERCOURSE.
Girls that have sex are like a chewed chewing gum, or used piece of duct tape, or a used shoe.

Think of your worst case scenario then run with it and try to make it worse, and you still haven't scratched the surface. All this in states that score like 1st, 2nd and such in teen pregnancy rates or STD transmission rates between teens.

Because I feel particularly strongly on this -- having gone through this myself -- here's a super fun rant! (I realize I'm preaching to the choir here probably)

When I was a teenager I went to catholic school and had to watch ALL of those horrible "sex ed" videos as part of the "eduction". Watching those reminded me how fucking awful those were, the only thing it accomplished was making my at the time gf and I (and everyone else we knew that watched those) feel incredibly guilty after we had sex or did anything sexual; causing needless stress and fear (after a while we stopped caring thankfully and the damage was mitigated naturally).

Those videos are harmful and toxic, only perpetuating fear, distrust and blatant lies that we were too young to actually understand were bullshit. People like Pam fucking Stenzil (who I had to see live at some youth catholic convention thing and was EXACTLY how the videos show her to be) should be locked in a dark pit with the key thrown away.

My only solace is knowing that Pam and people like her are probably as mentally fragmented and sexually immature as a child and she'll live a life of fear and hatred, and then die hollow, confused, and sad. John's video was pretty accurate though, and hilarious.

    /Rant over

apparently wisconsin just recently joined the league of abstinence only education as of scott walker's election several years ago. gotta love the backwards walk into the toilet my state is going in. i really can't take much more of this crap.

All I got when I was in school (Wisconsin) was about a 5 hour course in 5th grade. Half of it was worthless though because the teacher had to keep yelling at half the class to shut the hell up with the giggling.

    Good ol north cackalacky.

Shout out to any of the other southern states whose sex ed is a similar nonexistent joke.

That was a funny vid. The US legislation sucks. You need more federal laws and apply them to schools.

The fact that except for the minority who gets it through HBO Now, it's part of a premium cable package. That immediately puts it outside affordability for large swathes of the American public.

It might not be popular, but it's still mainstream...

My situation was similar, while they taught it in middle school. My parents were quite thorough (also big pervs), and what they missed my dad's magazines which I had found wrapped things up nicely.

Guess that depends on what system you're in. We had sex ed every year from 3rd grade to high school.

I think that was one of the issues mentioned in the video, there was no set of minimum standards.
