Yeah that's not going to go well, especially not for a first raid, unless they're tuned where deaths are acceptable (i.e. Vanilla WoW)

    Question I have on raids:

How do they plan on balancing this? I am not even referring to the Trinity, I am just referring to general balance, is it going to be 5 Mans and Fractals all over again? Are we going to see the exact same comp with the exact same set of gear every time? How do you plan to do mechanics that don't just end up being negated by holding at a specific door, or doing a specific glitch?

Sounds like they are making the same poor design decisions that has made GW2 nearly irrelevant and then applying them to raids which will result in the same failure.

"Waiting around for healers" is not really a problem, healers are very easy to find in mordern MMOs with a group finder system, so this is simply a figment rather then an issue that GW2 is propping up.

"Raids wont ever become easier with new gear" people who are not great at the game appreciate having new gear teirs that allow them to defeat content that was previously too hard, instead this new GW2 raid model will just exclude these players from ever having victory. Sounds nice in their marketing pitch, but in reality, its bad for a lot of average players.

I appreciate that GW2 is trying new things and coming up with new ideas, I really give them credit for that, we need that in this genre. However their ideas so far just are not working. Find some new ones.

Yup, and judging from the trailer footage, you don't have enough leeway time; from start to finish the nuke wiped the floor within about three-four seconds, and it took the hang gliders about three 3 seconds to make it from the boss to edge of the floor, so you get... one second to screw up, and if your not running by the first second you're dead for the rest of the fight. Being dead over a second's hesitation ain't fun. At all.

Down state is an integral part of combat, and deaths are generally acceptable. There are also traits and rune sets that enhance rez'ing.

If you had watched the trailer, you would've clearly seen that the players who did not make it off the platform died (as seen by their distinctive death animation), not downed. Or, down animations now use actual death animations.

Usually when you fall to your death you don't get downed. Because that's what happened.

Same. Something like raids requires a guild...which requires designated raid times... which requires teamspeak, which requires head phones....

They didn't fall to their death; they didn't jump in time so they got killed by the AoE nuke. Instant death mechanic with 1 second's worth of hesitation time. That's... rather unforgiving.

Hmmm, well. It took them long enough to realize they needed some form of actual end-game in GW2, didn't it? But saying there's essentially no reward for doing it, while up their alley, means they only half get why raiding exists in other games and why it works. How ever this concept is implemented, they need to be careful with how badly balanced their game system is, and they've never shown any interest in correcting the glaringly obvious and numerous issues with both balance and mechanics both from enemies and players.

I'd give it a try but I gave up on GW2 a long time ago sadly, I have it installed but no money for an expansion. 'Least if it's gonna be 30-40, which I'd assume it will be. I can only ever spare small purchases of $20 ish few and far apart.

Either way, to spite sounding skeptical and cynical: GW2 was originally, at launch, a fantastic experience that needed a system like this long ago and they sure took their time, but I hope that it works out for them and they eventually learn how to properly manage and balance their game. I'd like to return to GW2 some day and be amazed that they did, and really fall in love with it a second time.

So good luck to them with it.

ah I see. I think it's just part of a fight where you are suppose to be leaving which is why you don't survive. I wouldn't pass judgement that the entire fight is like that but it's pretty clear it gives you ample time to gtfo.

Seeing how poorly they've designed most of their dungeons, bosses, and events up to this point, I honestly don't have much faith in Anet to deliver on good, meaningful raid content. AKA, it'll still be OHKO mechanics that most people will probably try to berserk DPS down. Granted, the new raid mechanics may not allow that type of playstyle, but seeing how there is no trinity system in place in GW2, the amount of diversity and mechanics have to be limited to account for everyone being responsible for themselves (aka, dumbed down content like the whole game has been so far). Also...with said system in place, how punishing are these raids going to be if 1 or 2 people die during the encounter? With Anet's track record, I don't foresee them allowing raid teams to beat bosses with only 7 or 8 people alive out of the 10, even if those people are playing amazingly and doing their damnedest to pull it off.

But who knows, maybe they'll make some amazing raids that are a lot of fun to play and actually reward the player with decent stuff. Hopefully they do, for the sake of everyone playing the game. I personally don't believe they'll pull it off very successfully until I see it with my own two eyes.

Also: LOL at the gear grind comment on their HoT raid page. GW2 is one of the absolute grindiest games I've ever played in order to get the top end gear. I'm sure each piece of legendary armor will take an obscene amount of time to acquire, just like legendary weapons. I love how they always say "our game isn't about grinding" and yet they're one of the worst offenders out there in terms of producing grindy content.

Wait, those massive fucking dragon-god-things weren't raids?

Looks like a raid to me...

They really need to make sure these bosses aren't just doing one-hit KOs every few seconds, or this is gonna be awful.

a great time to have a guardian main =)

There's some problems with this idea of all raids being current and extremely challenging. The latest ones are always going to be the most popular. Most people will really only be willing to do those ones. People will be focused on learning the latest ones. As you go back to the older ones, you will find less and less people willing to do them. And even if you could find them, they will probably not have done them for a long time, if at all. They will have to learn the mechanics and tactics from scratch. If all raids are as challenging as the very latest ones, this will be frustrating when you have to get pugs or new recruits.

Of course this doesn't matter for a game with only a handful of raids ever released. It only becomes a problem when you have a lot of old raids stretching back over several years, like WoW, which is a state I doubt Guild Wars will ever reach.

You can probably put money on it that this is what every raid boss will be like. OHKO mechanics frequently that will punish you for not dodging. That formula got boring and old REAL fast with the original game and it hasn't improved any from what I can tell.

I don't know that I will be doing the raids a lot because I don't have a time I can set aside for them religiously. That said, I think it's a great addition because it brings more variety into the game and with more variety we have more players. More players is good for the game as a whole.

Ohohoho here we go again. I would reserve a judgement before playing raids in gw2. Speculating is pointless here since the team responsible for raids is different than team who made dungeons. They actually hired some raid designer specialist and AI guy. Also one or two instant death mechanice is not a problem IMO, it encourages You to be aware od shit.

Don't take this as hate (because its not, this is a good thing for this game) but with this dies the last thing they talked about in their "manifesto".

Its funny how they tried so hard to make this game so drastically different from every MMO, only for later start introducing the classic MMO elements they mocked so hard in the first place. Like raids, or gear progression.

Before we know it, the class trinity will be back too (if it isn't already)
