I don't know why radio stations insist on playing popular songs over and over and over again. On one radio station I listen to, if they play anything by red hot chili peppers I am immediately changing stations.

Thankfully, my backup station is classical radio, and it's pretty easy to not be bored there.

Around here we have mostly Country, R&B, Hip Hop, New Country, Throwback Hip hop.

I listen to talk radio or NPR depending on the day, wish they would drop Glen Beck though

If by popular you mean that it's something that the masses usually go for, I'd say you answered your own question. Radios are after listeners. And it's easier to get those by appealing the masses.

Also sampling and covers happens and it happens quite a bit in commercially popular music, you would be surprised how many 'new' songs are often almost a copy and paste.

If you want an interesting Radio Station. Check out 90.3 The Core in Piscataway NJ. Good mix of different music. Tons of unsigned bands, or just uncommon genre's.

Pandora at this point. It doesn't burn all that much in my experience, and you can get the music you really want to hear.

For me, it's Youtube. I create my own play lists of exactly what I want to hear. There is just something about Pandora that I don't like.

When I did use a music streaming service, I used Jango (http://www.jango.com/music?l=0). Jango was sorta like Facebook meets Pandora. It was a music streaming/social media service.

My local stations suck but I listed to Sirus XM channel 1 as I'm not a subscriber they always play the same 5 songs.
