You can't blame 4chan. It's got nothing to do with the site. The same thing could happen on Reddit, or here. It's the people on the internet that make this stuff, blame them, not where they are expressing these (and to be honest, 4chan is usually faster than reddit in most cases to close down posts)

There's no such thing as "objectively" overboard (noted the pun in your OP btw); what defines your limits might be way too far for some, and not far enough for others.
