    Are you a prepper?

This topic is about the end of life as we know it. How likely is it that you think that society will collapse in your lifetime? Are you prepared for such an event if/when it occurs? This is a thread to hang out and discuss how you'd deal with the end of the world.

I don't believe I will see the end during my life time. Things are "bad" but they aren't the worse they've ever been. Except perhaps the end being from an Asteroid, or some other natural disaster.

I'm a pretty resourceful person and I'm quite sure I could last for more than a few days (or weeks or months for that matter), but no, I don't have a current stockpile of any sort.

Nope. No idea what I'd prepare for.. Solar storm, meteorite, world war, nuke strike, plague, global ice-age, worldwide Islamic state, total anarchy, food shortage, water shortage... ?

I used to only keep a few days food on hand. Now that I buy from Walmart and Amazon online and have to order like $50 to get the free shipping, I'm buying more in bulk. I get 40 pound sacks of flour and 20 pound sacks of rice for example.

So if I was cut off from a grocery store like after a big hurricane, I could last 30-50 days. How to cook the stuff without electricity would be a challenge. I have a camp stove somewhere...

I've been thinking about doing that for a while now. I doubt I'll ever need it, but it's fun :P

Have 6 months worth of MREs or whatever. It was a gift from my friend. So I am prepped for six months.

I started prepping a few days a go because of the invasion of immigrants in Europe, i think its just a matter of time before things get out of hand here. I now have a stock pile of canned food, water filters, some practical things like a good swiss knife, matches, etc. Its not much but its something. I still need to find something to protect myself though.

Really depends how it all goes down.

If it's something like a zombie apocalypse, some friends and I made a plan years ago - grab whatever I can and head to the marina across the street from my building, hijack a boat and head about 30-45 minutes north to a rendezvous island - wait there 24 hours for the others - then all head north and offshore a few hours: one of our friends has a family cottage on an island with only something like 2 other cottages.

That becomes our base of operations for sea raids on the nearby towns for supplies, but with boats / plenty of fish / fresh water - we're probably pretty good up there. 2 mechanics in the group, 2 paramedics, smart/nerdy crowd.

If it's a nuclear winter or an asteroid shower or a gamma ray burst or something - not really much anyone can do.

The grocery market is farther away so we have always supplies worth a month.
    But that's not for prepping.
Apart from that, handgun and hunting rifle are in my weapons locker and I can get around in the outdoors.

So I think we are not so badly set, if something should happen.

Prepared for the zombie apocalypse! Even have bullets with "Zombie Killer" on them along with an AR to use them in. Have lots of different forms of self protection, many guns, knives, etc...Keep extra meds and food and essentials because I live in a Hurricane zone. Also have sheet metal for all windows and doors to be screwed in. I have 2 backup generators, one big enough to run my fridge/freezer/etc..and a 2nd smaller one if needed. Have propane grill with extra propaned, etc...Should last a bit longer than most people anyway! AM by no means an extremist but with some of the hurricanes we have gotten (lost power for 6 weeks during Ike) we are prepared for a bit of natural or unnatural disaster!

I like how there's no gap between "I have a few supplies" and "I'd be dead". I'm inbetween those. I live in a small enough town that I doubt we'd change much, short of dealing w/ no electricity and utilities. Small enough that it would be pretty easy to keep going as a town.

I read an article about prepping because I find it fascinating. In the article the journalist was interviewing a shopping website owner that caters to preppers who said that each new catastrophe creates a new batch of preppers. He said they always see a bump in sales after a Hurricane or some international threat like the massive wave of refugees sweeping across Europe.

Personally, I'm betting on Team Society. Global trends seem to indicate that we're slowly evolving into a less violent, more communal global society that could ultimately mean the end of wars and borders (Star Trek future). I could be wrong and we're all headed for a dystopian future where it all falls apart (Fallout future).

out of curiousity, what do the expiration dates of these look like? I mean does rice ever go bad?

I'm going with the live forever idea. I believe that humans will soon usher in a age of no longer growing old and simply dying from it. The tech is really around the corner, just a matter of time. And no society will not collapse ever in the future. The world is made of love and peace after all.

I'd put you in the "some supplies" category, even if the supplies aren't in your pantry. I hadn't considered small isolated towns that could pool their resources and be ok for months or years.
