Hunter potentially kills the bear because it attacks his brother in its natural habit while protecting her cubs (why the hell is hunting allowed during breeding season?) and authorities are looking for the bear now. They're also "not sure whether the attack was defensive or predacious" like it friggen matters. The only reason to make a statement like that is to justify killing the animal.
If you want to hunt, fine. But you need to acknowledge that only your gun makes you a predator - without it you are bear shit. You enter the domain of the true predators at your own risk. A bear has every right to kill you without cause or repercussion - they were here first. Humans have no right to kill a wild animal, caged or uncaged.
I can dig up a hundred or a thousand stories like this if you wish.
