Maalus vs Sanctus which is more beneficial. I know the 50% versatility boost is just as good as the 25% dmg boost of maalus and better because it also offers damage reduction, but maalus offers a lot of crit instead of bonus armor and if the encounters are tuned to be tankable without a ring doesn't it make sense at that point to add crit and a damage explosion at the end?

The on-use effect doesn't work if you're in the wrong specialisation, so the tanking ring is always better.

If it did work, it might be debateable. The DPS ring begins at 25% damage increase, and then 25% of damage done during buff contributes to the explosion. This means that you do 125% damage for however long the buff is, and at the end you explode for 25% of 125% damage, which is 31.25% damage. That means the DPS ring is a 56.25% damage increase.

The tank ring begins at 50% versatility, which is +50% damage done, but does not multiply with the rest of your versatility. If you already had 50% versatility (how!), then adding 50% versatility would take your damage done not including versatility from 150% to 200%, a 25% increase. Obviously nobody has 50% versatility outside of the ring buff, but it does mean that in reality you probably get something like a 48-49% damage done increase.

As the rings increase in item level, the difference between them diverges, because if the DPS ring were doubled to be 50% and 50%, then the total damage increase would be a 125% damage increase; whereas if the tank ring were doubled to be 100% versatility, this would be a 100% damage increase (excluding the issues related to it not multiplying your versatility as discussed earlier).

Bonus Armour is significantly better than Crit for damage done. However even a 56.25% over a 48-49% damage buff is a big difference and the DPS ring would be much better if the on-use worked, at all stages.

However, as I said, the DPS ring on-use does not work for tanks. So definitely use the tank ring.
