There's a big difference between a simple preference and "Yellow Fever."
'Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers clogged with rotting red
And there they lay I damn me eyes

Yeah, one of my coworkers is a very down to earth 35 year old Korean lady who thinks more racist jokes SHOULD be made. She thinks people are too uptight. She said oriental is old/not necessarily in good taste. She said it's better to use oriental to describe an Asian THING, but not person.

    Like...
"Today I bought an Oriental rug." = Okay.
"Oh, that lady is Oriental." = Not so okay.
    "A flower.
Yes. Upon your return, I will gift you a beautiful flower."

"Remember. Remember... that we once lived..."

It's only offensive to the geographically illiterate .

At least here in Germany the translation into German is still used when referring to the west, and the more Latin version like in the topic is used mostly for the east. Or both Orient and Occident together when you try to pimp your literary style.

While close that is not actually an analogue.
Correct would be 'try to call someone from england british'.
Which will cause an entirely different reaction.

Only in english, in most other languages it includes anyone belonging to a culture centered between Greece and the Pacific Ocean.
