    Playboy does what?

    So this (as I'm sure a few of you have seen) is trending on the facebook news;

    As you may have heard, Playboy is going to be non-nude starting with the March 2016 issue, which actually comes out in the month of February, because that’s how magazines roll. This means the models, celebrities and, yes, Playmates will not be naked for the first time since our founder Hugh Hefner laid out the first issue in 1953.

    The question everyone will likely be asking is, “Why?” Playboy has been a friend to nudity, and nudity has been a friend to Playboy, for decades. The short answer is: times change.

    When Hef created Playboy, he set out to champion personal freedom and sexual liberty at a time when America was painfully conservative. See: any popular movie, TV show or song from that era. Nudity played a role in the conversation about our sexual liberties, and over 62 years the country made great strides politically and culturally.

    We like to think we had something to do with that.

    Last year we re-launched Playboy.com as a safe-for-work site and discovered something about our readers and our identity: The Bunny transcends nudity. Tens of millions of readers come to our non-nude website and app every month for, yes, photos of beautiful women, but also for articles and videos from our humor, sex and culture, style, nightlife, entertainment and video game sections. We are, and always have been, “entertainment for men” – with award-winning journalism and fiction to boot. Playboy is a cultural arbiter of beauty, taste, opinion, humor and style.

    Yes, we’re taking a risk by going non-nude, but this is a company—like all great companies—that has risk in its DNA. It was built around a magazine virtually no one thought would succeed, yet now it’s impossible (for us, anyways) to picture a world without Playboy. Our journalism, art, photos and fiction have challenged norms, defied expectations and set a new tone for decades.

    So we say: Why stop now?

    I'm just wondering what everyones general thoughts are?

    While a lot see it as sleezy in the past, it is quite a iconic magazine which has spanned 60 years and main feature is nudity, think it'll pay off/ blow up in their faces / or do a massive u turn in 6 months?

    Playboy is one of those magazines that have become what comic books are now. A collectible. Not very many people actually buy the magazine anymore as it's mostly online stuff that the majority of people rather see. The people who are collecting them as collectibles will stop buying the new stuff and the company will suffer(but only slightly). It will probably end up being one of those online only publications afterwards. I surprised it hasn't gone full online yet...

    well considering print has changed drastically in the last decade, and it's next to impossible to compete with the instantaneous nature of the internet, print needs to change or die. considering the internet is for porn, i think this was a smart move for playboy.

    Mostly likely, it is just business. With availability of nudes all over the internet for free, Playboy is suffering. Company value has plummeted (it was valued at around $1 billion in 2000 and is worth less than $200 million now), so they are looking to expand their audience with the power of their name but without the NSFW content.

    So we'll have yet another Maxim/Esquire/GQ/FHM/Complex/Blender/Nuts/Stuff/Details? Great. As it happens I don't read Playboy for the articles. I just like when female celebrities go nude. Doing Playboy used to be a big deal, now some of their pictorials aren't even nude and big name actresses don't go for it anymore. Cutting out the nudity will likely see Playboy die.

    Oddly it's also trending here in off topic on the front page

    Who the f reads playboy or any top shelf magazines now anyway? I've not brought a single Honcho, Colt, Stallion or Inches magazine in years since I see more things for free online.
