I just finished season 1 a week ago and loved it. Viola Davis worked for that Emmy. She was amazing and overall I just loved the diverse cast and the central mysteries at play. I bought the season 2 pass on iTunes but haven't watched any of the episodes yet (I think they're on episode 3 or 4 already).

Is this another Dexter-esque show? What is it?

It's a lawyer show. A criminal law professor (former defense attorney) with a bunch of law students as the main cast. It was created by Shonda Rhimes, who created Grey's Anatomy, so that's the tone/dramatic aspect of it, except it's with lawyers instead of doctors.

Viola Davis earned that Emmy. Especially the scene where she took her wig and all her makeup off. I felt it.
