I love how someone said "Dragon Ball Z Evolution". Ba-ZING!
It's all subjective and up to preference but I thought "It Follows" was a horrible concept .. most horror movies are just lame ideas, that stack on horrible execution. But that's my opinion, obviously many people here and elsewhere, would disagree with me.
I've watched as many horror movies as I can, I watch them all, knowing they're all going to be horrible .. the ones that get a pass from me .. are things like "The Thing" .. remake, or the original .. both were good. "The Grudge" remains my #1 recommendation if it hasn't been seen by the person already. The Japanese have a knack for subtle creepiness, and The Grudge has a simple plot but it makes total and logical sense, and follows through on it solidly. "The Ring" on the other hand was laughably bad.
I know there are some others but I'm trying to drag them out of the recesses of my mind. "After.Life" is classified as a horror movie but it's really more of a mindfuck. No chasing, no monster, no scares. Just a creepy and intentionally unanswered plot that feels very well put together to spite being slow.
"The Awakening" I think it was, started out good but went bad fast .. Roger Ebert hit the nail there: "A great buildup and atmosphere, totally destroyed by the ending". Yep, pretty much ..
"Event Horizon" was good, if you think it falls under horror .. the finale was anticlamatic to me but it was still a solid concept ..
EDIT: Oh and it isn't a movie but I'd recommend perhaps, the TV series: "American Horror Story". Each season is an entirely different setting and new characters, with a new plot, so you might look over each season and pick the one that seems the most appealing to you.
