"The fall 2011 season is the first time there's been no TV show, on any network, featuring people on spaceships, since probably the mid-1980s."
"What's happened to us? We haven't just lost our space shuttle program, we've lost our zest for space adventure altogether, at least in TV and movies. How can we get our love for space opera back? "
What will it take for us to get our love for the space opera genre back? During the last decade LOTR and Harry Potter helped make fantasy more popular. What will be the space opera equivalent of those that will do for space opera what LOTR and Harry Potter did for fantasy?
It's really a matter of the creators making good content that is marketed well and finds an audience.
Game of Thrones isn't popular because the 'the fantasy genre is back!' or 'fans wanted an epic fantasy again!'
Game of Thrones is popular primarily because it is well made and has a shitton of marketing dollars to support the show.
Sci-Fi is still one of the most popular genres with films and television shows made all the time. Just few of those have been good. Jupiter Ascending was no Guardians of the Galaxy. The latter was a smash hit and critical success; well made and marketed.
You as a consumer have almost nothing to do with this at all. You just consume.
Seems like sci-fi tends to attract a smaller audience, at least when it comes to TV shows. Plus the shows end up costing more with all the special effects and CGI. Most shows only get 2-3 seasons and then end up cancelled.
It's sad there hasn't been a really good fully fleshed out sci-fi since BSG.
I guess it's pretty sci-fi to still think it's the year 2011...but, just you wait until you get to the year 2015, there will be some space opera type shows AND movies out.
