Murder convictions and the sentencing of them?

I see a lot of cases of murder on channel ID and just in the general news. And I just can't understand how these people who are found guilty only get a mere 10-40 years in prison and not life without parole or death sentence. Ex. A woman kills her 2 year old son on purpose and even tried to hide it and only gets 25 years. Seriously how messed up is the justice system to only give these people who take another persons life and found guilty of it to get such weak sentences. What is yalls opinion about this subject?

(Also this isn't a thread about police or if the death sentence is right or wrong, or any other off topic subject esp. Nothing tondo with race. This is just about the sentencing once you have been found guilty of the crime and the punishment they recieve for it.)

Why? Because countries cannot afford keeping convicts for what would ammount to free welfare for rest of their lives. Some countries are reaching a point where the following steps have to be taken:

    - Reduced sentences to cut costs
    - Forced prisoners to make them earn their upkeep (Slavery)
    - Exile from country to some random desert nation
    - Euthanise and have one less pie hole to deal with

25 years is still a very long time, regardless of how many potential years were taken from the victim. 25 years is like a third of your life, and usually it's the best third of your life. Many people also forget life after prison isn't easy either with a criminal record, there are lots of restrictions for those people in all kinds of ways (jobs, housing, welfare programs are all limited), so it's definitely a life sentence in some regards.

On a unrelated note, does anybody knows what happens to elderly people in prison? Do they get early parole/released and put in elderly homes? I can't imagine they keep them in prisons seeing how they would take up a lot of guards time with the various help they need and the huge risk of getting injured if they get bumped and fall.

There exists this crazy notion, that a just society is willing to forgive if the criminal has truly regretted their unlawful actions.
"In order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance." Paradox of tolerance

Because with rehab it should not always be needed to give them a life sentence.
