Do you find death an uncomfortable topic?

Long story short I have a terminal condition which was estimated to kill me in my mid teens (i'm 29 now). Because of this the prospect of death has always hovered over me which probably gave me a macabre sense of humour especially towards death. Now naturally whenever I meet new people be it friends staff or lovers it eventually pops up in conversation to mixed response. Example my current boyfriend doesn't like discussing it at all whereas my ex could joke about it with me.

So curious what your opinions on death are in conversation

    Love Rick and morty.

And death is only weird cause people have this weird fetish with living forever. We all die. It's fine. No reason that is weird.

all things come to an end, including our lives. Those who are afraid of death are those who refuse to believe this.

Not true. I'm afraid but I also understand and believe all things come to an end. I understand the heat death of the universe will eventually come to pass. I understand the Earth will be swallowed by the Sun in a few billion years when the Sun begins to die.

But yes, I am afraid of death. Why? Let's say no religion is right and we simply cease to exist, that idea doesn't necessarily please me. However living infinitely also doesn't please me. I've accepted the truth that death will come and know it will happen to me sooner or later - however that doesn't mean I cannot be afraid of what it means.

I have a strong sense of gallows humor it helped me in the service but death itself utterly terrifies me.

I have lead a life that has touched on religion a lot. To this day I question if my belief is genuine or simply a by product of me latching on to anything that gives some reassurance that death isn't the end.

I honestly can not say if I am a strong enough person to believe that it all truly ends in death. I do not know if I am actually devote or simply a coward.

Well, if you're an atheist death is like turning a light switch off, out go the lights. Nothing to be scared about cause there is literally nothing.

If you're Christian you get Heaven so there's that. Really Heaven is more scarier than the atheist's void cause stuff can happen in Heaven, like getting thrown out. Nothing happens in the void.

for me death isn't something to be scared of, blame it on me being a nihilist/atheist. but I have never really broached it with other people around me, I would assume my views on it would terrify them.

No, I do not find the topic of death uncomfortable.

Post #2 that links the Rick & Morty cartoon is actually fairly accurate to my view of the world and it's maneuvering.

Life has no point, it is absurd. We are absurd. Value and meaning only exists as we personally attribute value and meaning in our limited perception of being. A being that has no real purpose beyond the biological engine set in motion by accident or circumstance.

    Death is nothing.

I don't find death an uncomfortable topic, which is lucky for me since I had way too many encounters with it.

I'm more inclined to believe people with an unfulfilled life are the ones who are uncomfortable with death. People who spend their entire lives worrying instead of living being terrified of dying before doing anything important with their life. That's no way to live...or to die for that matter.

It's unfortunately a part of life. There is no point in being afraid of the inevitable.

Since I don't believe in an afterlife I'm not afraid of death. I will simply cease to exist, no heaven, hell or eternal void. I won't know that I'm dead so there is no need to worry about it. What does make me uncomfortable is the thought of dying, the thought of not being able to experience life anymore. I don't want it to end, but I accept that it will. No use worrying about it, I just enjoy myself while I can.

Also the thought of an afterlife seems pretty shitty to me. Spend eternity forced to praise some god, either living with the thought of loved ones being tortured for all time or having this god alter your mind so you won't care. No freedom, no way to live, just an eternity of servitude. A celestial North Korea as one famous atheist once said. I'd love too live for a couple of hundred thousand year or so here on earth. Everything keeps changing so there will always be something interesting to see. Shame we only have a couple dozen.

I dont mind talking about it, though i dont actually know people irl that i talk about it with. Its a rather complex topic, some people get religion involved, others are just afraid of death but either way its very different and personal for most people. Due to a history of depression im also hesitant to speak about it with people i know. I dont want to give the impression that things are going bad, and death isnt on my mind so much that i feel the need to talk about it. But by itself i dont find the topic uncomfortable, and its nice to read im not the only one.

I work with it, so mostly I don't care about it, other times it's just a nuisance.

Not really but my father does: I'm worried that he'll develop Pneumoconiosis because he worked with asbestosis as a teenager and he seems afraid to get tested... I guess some people are so scared of it that they'd rather not know.

Your "atheist's void" is actually not atheist at all. You still believe that there is a "void" where something of you vanish to once dead.

Atheist don't believe, period. You die and your corpse will rot, the end.
