This is quite absurd...
Some crazy stuff. Makes you question stuff
Not that I doubt the crookedness of our tax code, but it seems to me that donation money wouldn't be considered income. She's not providing a service, she's not running a business, she's not doing anything but asking people to give her money. If nonprofit charities are tax exempt, why isn't this? Now I could see how this would go bad in the case of Patreons and such.
Government thinks all money belongs to them.
Whatever we have and however we get it is purely the result of what they allow us to have after taking their cut.
MAGA
When all you do is WIN WIN WIN
Well the more real question is what is the incentive for people to stay honest?
2014 Gamergate: "If you want games without hyper sexualized female characters and representation, then learn to code!"
2023: "What's with all these massively successful games with ugly (realistic) women? How could this have happened?!"
The IRS and jail.
Gifts are taxable. Even gifts between parent->child over 10k are taxable once the child leaves the household (and frankly, I'm not sure they have to be out of the household). Otherwise this would be an incredibly easy way to cheat taxes. No, that car dealership and I are good friends. They just gave me a car. And then I gave them a $25k gift (and it's tax deductible since it's a gift!).
I mean, ya, it sucks in this instance, but if you guys can think of a good way to codify this in law, with no loopholes, I'm sure someone would give it a look. Too bad something like that would require a board to judge what's a reasonable gift and what's not a reasonable gift. A board that would need to be larger than the IRS is now because of all the gift claims.

Oh good, so there is a way.
I'm skeptical...seen too many scammers trying to double dip. Sure it may be legit, but there's other ways she can get help than by a gofundme page. Plus, yes...that should be counted as income, but she shouldn't have to be chosing one over the other. Cut her benefits a little so the cash can compensate...but don't totally cut her off. Think there's more to the story.
