Russian jets violate Turkish airspace, Turkey warns of consequences

Turkey warns Russia of 'consequences' after a new airspace violation

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/w...pace/79563500/

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned Moscow on Saturday that it would be forced to “endure the consequences” if its jets continue to violate the Turkish airspace, after Ankara reported a new border infringement incident by a Russian plane.

NATO-member Turkey said another Russian warplane violated its airspace on Friday despite several warnings — two months after Turkey’s military shot down a Russian jet for crossing over its territory. The past incident seriously strained the previously close ties between the two countries, damaging a strong economic partnership.

“We regard this infringement which came despite all our warnings in Russian and in English as an effort by Russia to escalate the crisis in the region,” Erdogan told reporters before departing on a Latin American tour. “If Russia continues the violations of Turkey’s sovereign rights, it will be forced to endure the consequences.”

He did not specify what those consequences might be.

Erdogan said he attempted to reach Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the issue but that the Russian leader did not respond.

“These irresponsible steps do not help the Russian Federation, NATO-Russia relations or regional and global peace,” Erdogan said. “On the contrary they are detrimental.”

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said the Russian SU-34 crossed into Turkish airspace on Friday, ignoring several warnings in Russian and in English by Turkish radar units. It said Ankara summoned the Russian ambassador to the ministry Friday evening to “strongly protest” the violation. It was not clear where exactly the new infringement had occurred.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also called on Russia “to act responsibly and to fully respect NATO airspace” but also urged “calm and de-escalation” of tensions between Moscow and Ankara.

“Russia must take all necessary measures to ensure that such violations do not happen again,” he said in a statement. “NATO stands in solidarity with Turkey and supports the territorial integrity of our ally, Turkey.”

There was no immediate comment on the incident from Moscow.

In November Turkey shot down a Russian plane which violated its airspace near Syria, touching off a crisis between the two countries. It was the first time in more than half a century that a NATO nation had shot down a Russian plane.

Turkey brought down the Russian Su-24 bomber near the border with Syria on Nov. 24, saying it violated its airspace for 17 seconds despite repeated warnings. Russia insists the plane never entered Turkish airspace. One pilot and a Russian marine of the rescue party were killed in the incident.

The Russian military quickly sent missile systems to Syria and warned that it would fend off any threat to its aircraft. Moscow also punished Turkey by imposing an array of economic sanctions.

On Saturday, Stoltenberg said NATO had agreed in December to increase the presence of AWACS early warning planes over Turkey to increase the country’s air defenses. He said the decision was taken before Friday’s incident.
Considering last time Russian planes violated Turkey's airspace - I cannot imagine this ending well not only for Russia (again), but Turkey and the Syrian conflict.

Well, they didn't shoot it down. So that's something. Silver linings and all.

Naturally, Russian Minitry of Defense denies everything.

I almost wish they shot down this one as well. That way we'd be certain the plane had actually been there.

Turkey is tame now. It wont bite you for 17 seconds of airspace violation anymore. They learned.

Part of me wants Turkey to start something with Russia and give NATO a convenient excuse to kick Turkey out of their club. We need to stop being allies with these Islamist governments. As bad as Russia is, I'd rather side with them than any Middle Eastern nation.

Turkish military is authorized to shoot down on next violation. Let's see what Russia's balls are made of.

They have been authorized to shoot down without violation, so I don't see how it changes anything.

NATO can't kick out countries on account of defending their borders against Russia, otherwise the NATO treaty isn't even worth using as toilet paper.

    Totally Agree

    Turkey has been supporting ISIS.
They would love to start a major conflict with NATO coming to their aid

Ankara's support for ISIS and other jihadist groups became undeniable in January 2014 when Turkish prosecutors sent a team to search three trucks in the southern province of Adana. The Syria-bound trucks carried a cargo of more than fifty missiles and nearly forty crates loaded with ammunition. An ISIS jihadist later indicated that the Turkish government had delivered stocks of weapons and military hardware to the group's fighters in Syria.

According to reports, this time is was an Su-34 that allegedly violated Turkish airspace so shooting it down wasn't really a viable option for the Turks.

This one can actually fire back and its backed by world's best land a/a system. Turkey airplanes won't scramble to intercept / dogfight as they are scared shitless.

Last thing Erdogan wants is for Putin to actively back the PKK so he's not likely to do much more than whine a bit.

Funny thing with the Turks is that they violate our airspace thousands of times per year. Even yesterday when our minister of army went to Imia to pay tribute to some soldiers that lost their lives from Turks, a couple of Turkish F-16s flew right new to his helicopter. Erdogan is a piece of shit and his government too. Turkey needs to be kicked out of NATO.

But hey, despite their multiple genocides, their aggressive policy towards their neighbors, the fact that they arm, train, fund and cover terrorists, and the fact that give 0 fucks for human values, rights and lives, they are backed up by the americans 100%. So yeah,,

You know I can just imagine the Turkish press release having in small print "Please do not look at the Aegean radar for the past 20-30 years, it's all lies honest."

    It's a valid point.
