Probably because he was a household name for 50 years.... That's like asking why any famous persons death is reported

He was an incredibly popular TV and Radio presenter, and renound interviewer.

2016 is continuing to be pretty remorseless.

My mum listened to his radio when I was growing up.

He was pretty entertaining I thought. Didn't have a terrible taste in music. Great presenter of Eurovision when he was doing it

Same, he did the breakfast show when I was a kid on Radio 2 that was on every morning as I got up for school. He was kind of funny as he used to do mini features like a parody reportage on Dallas giving his own names to all the characters. e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_E...opular_culture he had something crazy like 8 million listeners every weekday in the early to mid 80s IIRC

He was a really funny guy in a way that appealed to nearly everyone. Not in the least bit up his own arse. He wasn't a great interviewer when he moved to TV and had his own show but for ten years he used to get some good mileage out of playing a likeable idiot to some of the most famous people in the world. I think he was one of those rare celebrities that most people like and pretty much nobody could take offence from.
