    Please help..my daughters math problem

    Im tired ive tried figuring it out but I cant.

    Problem:
    Scattered around the house are 100 nuts in 5 bowls.

    1st and 2nd bowl together contain 48 nuts
    2nd and 3rd bowl together contain 34 nuts
    3rd and forth bowl together contain 30 nuts
    4th and 5th bowl together contain 48 nuts

    How many nuts are in each bowl?

    Its almost her bed time someone plz hurry lol

    You need to use common core.

    If she's covered matrices, this is just a row reduction problem (you have 5 equations in 5 unknowns).

    when all else fails, read the STICKIES.

    There is probably some way to set that up as an equation, but I've been a long time since I've had a math book in front of me.

    1, 2, 4 and 5 together contain 96, so there are 4 left for the 3rd. This means, that there are 30 in the 2nd and 26 in the 4th. So, 22 in the 5th and and 18 in the 1st.

    So, 18 + 30 + 4 + 26 + 22 = 100.

    Or, if you haven't covered matrices yet, notice that you know how many are in bowls 2+3 and in bowls 4+5, so you know how many are in bowls 2+3+4+5. So subtract that from 100 to get how many are in 1. Then you can get how many are in 2, then 3, etc.

    Or pick another one from google. Just search for "Scattered around the house are 100 nuts in 5 bowls".

    a + b + c + d + e = 100

    a + b = 48
    b + c = 34
    c + d = 30
    d + e = 48

    ----

    1) Sub last equation into first
    a + b + c + 48 = 100
    a + b + c = 52

    2) Combine first 2 equations
    a + b = 48
    b + c = 34
    a + 2b + c = 82

    3) Subtract step 1 from step 2
    a + 2b + c = 82
    a + b + c = 52
    b = 30

    4) Use value b to work out all the other values.
    a = 18
    b = 30
    c = 4
    d = 26
    e = 22

    .....maybe it's just me, but can't you just dive all those by 2? Or is there something I'm missing

    There's not an equal amount in all bowls.

    Or even easier:

    a + b + c + d + e = 100

    a + b = 48
    b + c = 34
    c + d = 30
    d + e = 48

    ----

    1) Sub 2nd and last equations into first
    48 + c + 48 = 100
    c = 4

    2) Use C=4 to work out all the other values
    a = 18
    b = 30
    c = 4
    d = 26
    e = 22

    Yeah you are, 1 might have been more then the other bowl. Instead of a 15-15 it could be 10/20. But Lockedout already gave the answer.

    I often wonder how homework could ever be a challenge for kids now. The internet is outstanding for collecting information, but it must be really difficult to push yourself to actually earn instead of just google the answer. Must be difficult for the teachers too

    No. Stripping the words, this is what the question is :

    a+b=48
    b+c=34
    c+d=30
    d+e=48
    a+b+c+d+e=100

    Solve for a, b, c, d, and e.

    x + y = 48
    y + z = 34
    z + a =30
    a + b =48
    a + b + x + z + y = 100

    That means that:
    z + y + x = 52
    since x + y = 48
    z = 4
    then y = 30
    x= 18
    a =26
    b =22

    Hope this will help.

    100-48-34=18

    i.e. 100 - (B4+B5) - ( B2+B3) = B1

    work that up the chain, e.g. B2 = 48 - B1 = 30

    and so on.
