It's not inconsequential in the slightest. There's far LESS social interaction in a typed message. If this wasn't the case, humans would be perfectly content beings living in physical isolation, with nothing aside from a fridge and internet connection.

This is assuming social interactions over the internet don't include voip and video calling. I have lots of people I consider close friends that I've never met in person
