Female warriors are simply much cooler in my opinion.

Depends on the game and whether/how the story is being presented.

Obviously if its a singleplayer RPG and there's an "immersion" factor thats relevant, I'd like to play a character I can relate to.

But if I'm playing through a story, instead of creating my own, I'm perfectly fine "watching" a character I may not relate to, but can understand in the terms of the experience. (or heck, I don't even have to understand them if they're some completely unknowable alien hivemind)

I'll only pick a girl character if it's more beneficial. Aside from that I'll pick male 10/10 times. When it comes to customizing, I try to recreate myself. People can play female for whatever reason they want, but don't expect me to share your opinion. Still laugh every time someone uses the argument "well it's better to stare at a girls butt than a males butt" it's all pixels. If I want to look at a butt for sexual reasons, I can easily alt tab and look up porn.

I'll be honest. I play female characters because if i'm going to spend hours/days/weeks/YEARS staring at a character I would rather be staring at a female.

In a new game I go girl because they are usually better looking, unless the dude is big and looks bad ass.

in WoW it's whoever has the better attack animation

    melee ud = female
    melee/caster Orc = male
    etc...

Because they're immature. I had people on youtube call me gay amongst other 2nd grader insults for playing a female on Grand Theft Auto Online. I simply wanted to stand out more. I was confused by their insults anyways. I mean, half of them saying this were little white children... If by me playing the other gender makes me gay, does them playing another race racist?

    Anyways.

Final Fantasy XIV I tried many race/gender combos, but like female humans for tank roles, and males for DPS.

In WoW, it depended on the class. Female Blood Elf Mage, Female Human Paladin, female blood elf rogue, female panda hunter. it's variety.

For me it's all about aesthetics. I generally prefer the female aesthetic over the male aesthetic. Voice overs usually tend to sway me one way or another as well.

As to why people are usually put off by playing the opposite gender, I dunno, since as far as I'm concerned it's fairly subjective based on personal tastes/biases.

maybe they just try/want to identify themselves with their character and therefore cant understand People who play the opposite gender. i rarely play a female character, my shaman was formerly an alt and now happened to be my main this Expansion.

i'd also prefer female characters because of aesthetics, but i usually stick to playing males.

    pardon my engrish

I usually play male characters in all games if I get to choose. Sometimes female. It just come downs to what fit the character most or looks better.
I don't mind playing either though.
Currently playing Rise of the Tomb Raider, and playing Lara doesn't take away anything from the immersion obviously.

And in WoW most my characters are male, but the main char is a female undead priest.

I'm female irl, if I can create a male toon I personally find attractive I'll play a man otherwise I just tend to stick to females as they tend to be better looking in most MMO

I don't really see the player character as an extension of myself or a self insert but more just a vehicle to experience the content with, therefore I play both genders with what mattering to me is things like how cool the animations or character build looks and the quality of the voice acting done (in non mmos mostly regarding VA)

I like to look at my female character's ass.

I'm male and most of the characters I play in MMOs are female. This is mainly because I like to have variety in the games I play - in a lot of single-player games nowadays, you're forced into the perspective of a male character anyway; so when I get the chance to play something different, I'll usually take it.
