SSD-how do i know when its time to get a new one? and should i use my old one for...

    Hey everybody,

Built my PC in Oct of 2012. When i made it i wanted to just use my SSD for essential files and i had intended to keep games and stuff on a separate external HDD. Well that didnt work out so well since the SSD spoiled me and i ended up installing/uninstalling games many times on the SSD as well as a bunch of other file transfers and deletions. I dont know much about SSDs except for one tip that i heard which was to never defrag it lol.

But anyways i was just wondering how would i know when its time to get a new SSD? rather than waiting until i get a critical failure or something. Also it should be possible to get a new SSD and install my OS on it and have it run as a master and then just connect my old SSD as a slave right? so that i can keep using it to play games off of. Stuff that i wouldnt really care about if the SSD craps out and cannot be recovered.

Not sure if it makes any difference but this is the SSD that i have right now that i've been using since 10/2012.

Yes you can just buy another one whenever you want and leave the old one as storage.

The section of text that I bolded is a perfect example of when to upgrade.

As for running master and slave that is impossible since the terminology only applies to ide/pata disks that are sharing the same port and cable. To be clear this is just me nit-picking and yes you can add as many drives as you have free sata ports for.

And if you manage to somehow fill up all the SATA ports on your motherboard, there's this...

Broke up the link because for some reason it kept on magicking into an officedepot link, that costs $30 more. Whaaat the hell?

"The SDSSDX-240G-G25 SSD drive supports S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic tools which indicate when the SSD is reaching the end of its lifespan, Native Command Queing (NCQ) and TRIM."

Check your smart stats to check the status of your old drive. It might still be perfectly fine.

Also, master and slave are really outdated terms when talking about drives, but yes you can use one as your primary windows boot, and the other can be an additional drive for storage.

I have three year old SSDs which I still trust 100% to be my primary boot drives.

You shouldn't be scared of wearing out a SSD.

SSD's are built to pretty much never wear out from writes. You can google tests where professionals attempt to break them by writing on them repeatedly and they will last nearly forever.

With modern SSD's this is true. I still wouldn't try defragging one though. But yeah, SSD's usually greatly outlast mechanical HDD's now.
