I still build Z87/Z97 systems that ought to last people through 2019 (with a 4690K)
    Gaming: Dual Intel Pentium III Coppermine @ 1400mhz + Blue Orb | Asus CUV266-D | GeForce 2 Ti + ZF700-Cu | 1024mb Crucial PC-133 | Whistler Build 2267
    Media: Dual Intel Drake Xeon @ 600mhz | Intel Marlinspike MS440GX | Matrox G440 | 1024mb Crucial PC-133 @ 166mhz | Windows 2000 Pro

IT'S ALWAYS BEEN WANKERSHIM | Did you mean: Fhqwhgads

As long as it isn't a skylake CPU (6600K, etc) since it won't fit that board.

Z97 Anniv ought to be fine. I've used several of them myself. If you really want to crank up the OC I might recommend a slightly better board, but I hit 4.2-4.4 on those no problem.

Yes, it is, though the G3258 is becoming less and less relevant. More and more games are making use of more cores, so I think the i5 is still the way to go. If you are going all new anyway, probably better to go Skylake:

$25 more, but when the Pentium starts to struggle you can put a 6600K in there instead of a 4690K.

My friend has the Z97 Anniversary and an 4690K and was able to get a 5.0 OC on it. He dialed it back to 4.6 since that's more than enough for him, but was able to run an overnight stress test at 5.0. It's a solid board.
