    How Good is Transcendental Meditation

About 10 years ago while at University and undergoing Exam stress I discovered a technique that is
natural, non religious and does not involve drugs that makes you feel ..so much better.

I attended my first Transcendental Meditation course, had a Hindu type ceremony performed by a bald gentlemen who lit some
incense, took some fruit & flowers from me and gave me a secret word...my Mantra.

I continued doing TM twice a day but once I entered the workforce, life began becoming busy and I forgot about TM.

Which brings me to now: The other day I was going through a very stressful period in life.
I was not sleeping & life seemed just shit.

So I sat down closed my eyes for 20 minutes and brought in my Mantra which as soon as some thought entered my head, I would wash away
    with my Mantra.

Well..Afterwards.. The stress was gone, I was not tired even though I only had 3 hours sleep the night before.
I had an Awesome day at work
And walked from work to home about 5 miles and had so much Energy.
The following night I slept for about 8 Hours.

I can see now why Celebrities like Katy Perry, Hugh Jackman, Clint Eastwood, Ellen De Generes plus lots of others
    do Transcendental Meditation.

It really gives you energy & focus because a lot of our thoughts actually waste natural energy.
I am going to continue with TM now.. Its like a long lost friend.

“It’s something that’s with you for your whole life,” Perry says. And she is keen to emphasize the practical, day-to-day value of practicing TM.

“You learn your mantra, it never leaves you, and it’s the deepest rest your brain gets. For people that are so creative and have this kind of creative faucet that never turns off – it just continues and continues – it can be a little exhausting.

    Well. dunno about the sex..
But there are records showing Indian practitioners of TM who have stayed
up quite a number of days who continually practice Transcendental Meditation over many hours
I wouldnt go to that extreme however.

    Its like a Natural Speed...

But again, what is the point of this thread? It's like making a thread and saying "I just realized that I like bananas."

Well considering a lot of the other threads on General Topic are mostly Negative

I thought I would introduce a positive Thread, that may help some people and point them in the
right direction with a effective way to control stress and focus.

Learning TM does not cost a lot..
It is not some weird cult
We can learn quite a bit from Eastern Cultures like India where
the practice of meditation is widespread.

You're probably thinking of tantric sex, but there are similar practices in qigong.
With COVID-19 making its impact on our lives, I have decided that I shall hang in there for my remaining days, skip some meals, try to get children to experiment with making henna patterns on their skin, and plant some trees. You know -- live, fast, dye young, and leave a pretty copse. I feel like I may not have that quite right.

That's cool and all, but the topic itself doesn't leave a lot to discuss. It kinda came across as nothing more than an infomercial. You could have ended it with "What are some ways that you guys use to recenter yourselves?" or even "Have any of you tried it?".
IDK man, not trying to come down on you or bring negativity into your thread, just trying to point out ways in which you could make your threads more engaging in the future.

Thanks Zeno for pointing that out.
I suppose I need to ask if their are any other meditation advocates out there...?
    And their success with it.

There are different forms of meditation
I think more of us need to get in touch with our inner selves
Because, from what I have experienced . Meditation is a very natural & healthy technique.
And NO you do not have to sit in lotus Position.

I've never really gotten into the whole meditation thing. I've tried a few meditations and they just didn't seem to do anything for me. Maybe I just cannot calm down my mind enough for it to have any significant effect - my brain is always working on something, even if it is something ridiculous and pointless... What did help me a lot was breathing exercises - although you need to do them quite regularly to develop a habit of doing them unconsciously all the time.

You can do away with the religious aspect and just find something to focus your mind on.

It's called a distraction, having sex, playing a video game, counting sheep in bed are all distractions.

I mainly stick to qigong, but I've had to step it back quite a bit since coming to China. It is still a significant part of how I deal with chronic pain, a severe sleep disorder, and the associated complications. It is purely an anecdotal point, but I continue to fail to die like I was supposed to a good number of years past.

That's part of starting to meditate, learning to focus past the distractions. Different forms of meditation teach various exercises for it, but of course you need to want to do the exercises or you'll just wonder what the hell you're doing.

If you (or any other readers) want to give something a spin, see if you can find a serious teacher for one of the internal Chinese martial arts. Tai Chi is probably the most accessible, but don't pass up things like Baguazhang. [I would, however, be very cautious about anything that heavily hypes itself as Shaolin because it may have been over commercialized.] Don't expect to experience sudden life altering experiences, it will probably take you at least a year to wonder what the heck is making you feel strange at times and it is something that you can spend decades on.

Thats merely a matter of breathing, but having a mantra sort of thing does help. its a side effect, of learning how to control your emotional state.

OT: Congrats? there are many different types of meditation, glad this one works for you. you can learn to do it without "sitting for 20m", always use the word/phrase you establish a link with to calm yourself, and just repeating it a few times in your head flats out your emotional state right away.

It was tantra I was thinking of.

Tantra is... different, its not about "going on for 10 hours". you can do that without tantra, just a matter of breathing as I said.

Tantra's goal is togetherness and oneness, there are many ways to do it, for example the "common" or starting position would be her sitting on your lap, facing you, from there you hmmm... unify breathing, not sure how to explain it, when she exhales you inhale, so you "share breathing"?
Then a lot about enjoying and focusing on the different feelings, your skin, the breathing, how the air caresses your skin, her skin against yours, the heartbeat etc.
