No, if you think that the US and EU can do whatever they want and not face consequences, then you are sadly mistaken. Why do you think there are all these months-long debates in UN every time before a military operation starts? We live in a globalized world; it is not like it was 1000 years ago, when one country could dictate how the world works. There are all kind of economical and diplomatic ties, that will be cut if someone, even very powerful and influential, does something that violates the commonly accepted standards. If the US decides tomorrow to walk over and annex a part of Mexico, for example, you bet there will be drastic consequences. Luckily, the US government understands it; there hasn't been annexations by the US for over a century now. For Russia, the latest is dated as late as 2 years ago, and the title in the topic might mean that there is a new one coming.

If you seriously think that the only difference in this all is that Russia is weaker than the US, then you are really, really wrong.

If the US decides tomorrow to walk over and annex a part of Mexico, for example, you bet there will be drastic consequences. Luckily, the US government understands it; there hasn't been annexations by the US for over a century now.

First of all, US is not interested in annexing Mexico, or any other country, because annexation means making peoples of these countries US citizens, and that, in its turn, would make US responsible for their new citizens and invest tons of money into their economy, fight their drug gangs and terrorists forever. They are not interested in it. They chose another way. Fuck up countries (for their national interests) and leave it to rot, making them an easy prey for terrorists and such (Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan to some degree, thou it was fucked up even before that).

You are focused on annexation for some reason, while missing crude violations of international law that brought up incomparably more suffering to peoples.

But in this case - international relations of the US with a lot of countries, especially Middle Eastern ones, worsened, with bans and sanctions from both sides, which led to a lot of extra problems in trade and diplomacy. Even despite all international rules being followed, the backlash was still enormous.
