Japan earthquake kills nine; more aftershocks expected

At least nine people died when an earthquake struck Japan late Thursday, the Kumamoto Prefecture disaster management office said.

Search crews scrambled to dig through rubble in southern Japan, looking for people trapped under collapsed buildings.
The magnitude-6.2 quake struck near Ueki, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Dozens of smaller aftershocks followed.
"The ground shook for about 20 seconds before the 6.2-magnitude quake stopped," witness Lim Ting Jie said.

I was in Japan in 2011, 3 months after the infamous earthquake, when aftershocks still could be felt regularly. Was in my room during a short magnitude-5 or so quake... Scary stuff.

Sad to hear about this, I've spent a few days right next to that city (in Yanagawa, Omuta and Okawa mostly) end of 2014. Best part of Japan I saw, might not be the most beautiful place, but definitely the most beautiful and open people I met in the country. Met sooo many people in just a few days that I still have regular contact with (had news from them, they're all ok).
