With my random internet poster credentials, I think a lot of it has to do with your iconic image being that of you being young. As you age, you no longer look like the icon that established your celebrity. There are probebly a lot of identity issues that stem from that, because you are the same person, but you no longer look like what people associate with you.

That's where drug addled celebrities succeed. Iggy Pop on heroin in his 20s, looks a lot like the aged rock star in his 60s.

Apparently it's used as a last resort when the blotches of white skin are too large for other treatments. But, like is say, I don't know if she actually has Vitiligo.
