    American vs confederate flag

So something I don't understand. There was a thread a couple of weeks ago asking if people were ok with someone burning the American flag. The general consensus seemed to have been that it was fine because it was just a piece of cloth and people shouldn't think so highly of the American flag. However people are extremely outraged about the confederate flag and saying that it stands for racism and the flag needs to be banned. If the American flag is just a piece of cloth with no meaning behind it then why was the confederate flag so controversial and not just a piece of cloth?

The confederate flag is a symbol for racism and makes certain groups of people feel uncomfortable around it. Not sure what else you're looking for.

And to others it no longer holds that meaning and instead represents other human concepts.

"No longer" is incorrect. They simply don't care about anyone else and like to pretend racism doesn't exist.

if someone is racist, he rather keep it to himself, but running around and showing that he is racist is not acceptable

and by raising the confederate flag, you show what you are racist believers, that no one would give a shit if you kept it to yourself.

    just saying.

so much this. Im terrified of the US, so much more when they start to collapse and look for an easy invasion, being their neighbor and all.

In general, I would not have a problem with a neighbor flying the Confederate Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia on their property or from their vehicle. First Amendment rights, and all. I'd shun that neighbor as being a deranged individual, and wouldn't welcome them on my property...

But the problem is when they try to get that flag of shame as the government-supported flag for states with histories of racism. That flag was a footnote in history (it was not one of the three official flags of the Confederate States), gaining prominence when the segregationists adopted it as a standard to rally behind when violently suppressing minorities and liberals. Asking that that flag of shame be "official" is like asking the residents of a Jewish-majority suburb to accept the Swastika as the official symbol of their city.

You are a lost cause. Believe what you want, even if it's wrong.

If I see you flying a Confederate flag, I will automatically think less of you, but it is within your rights.

Most likely being edgy and anti-conservative. It's the symbol of the nation, while the confederate flag is a symbol of an idea. That is the difference.

Why is it not acceptable to openly declare oneself to be a racist? Do they not have freedom of speech?

Freedom of speech means you won't be jailed or fined. It doesn't mean people have to respect you, or associate with you... or hire you.

You seem to not grasp things tend to cut both ways.

The confederate flag was actually never the symbol of a nation. It was a battle flag, but it was never the flag of the confederacy. It was brought back during the civil rights movement as symbol of solidarity for racists fighting against the civil rights movement. Thus as it is today it is the symbol for an idea. At the very least not a symbol for a nation as you have just claimed.

So was Hillary and Bill being racists when they brought it back in Arkansas in the 80s?

Actually it is the Naval Jack of the Confederate Navy. The Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia was square, not rectangular.
